2 super cute kids’ rooms

It’s blue for boys, pink for girls and stripes are the theme: neat and even, or wide and wonderful.

Two families flex their renovation muscle by starting on their lucky kids’ rooms. And breathe new life into some second-hand furniture with Resene paint.

Kids’ room decorating tips

  • Use a fabric, favourite toy, cushions or rug to kick-start your colour scheme. Resene has so many colours, that it’s much easier to match a paint colour to a fabric rather than the other way around.

  • The Resene KidzColour chart has a range of great kids’ colours from pretty pastels to bold primaries.

  • If you’re upcycling furniture, use Resene Enamacryl – it’s a tough waterborne enamel that’s perfect for this type of project and the gloss finish is easy to wipe clean.

  • If you’re painting stripes or geometric patterns, use low-tack masking tape so that your fresh paint isn’t damaged.

  • Resene Zylone Sheen VOC Free paint is a great low-odour paint with a lovely low-sheen finish that’s free of volatile organic compounds. Perfect for your precious little people.

A timeless look for two brothers

Catherine Larsen used a kick-starter item to inspire the colour scheme of the room to be shared by her sons Aaron and Isaac. A spotted fabric chosen for the roman blind was matched to Resene Botticelli, Resene Bunting and Resene Alabaster, which were then used to paint the wide striped wall. The other three walls and all the trims are Resene Linen.

All of the furniture is second-hand; Catherine painted the chest of drawers in Resene Celery with Resene Magnetic Magic paint underneath. Large letter names stake out each boy's territory. Catherine wanted the scheme to inject personality yet be timeless enough to last the boys through their teenage years with small things like artwork and bedding able to be changed as they grew and interests changed.

Baby Isaac has his own corner of the room.

Nina’s happy place

Once Emily Funnelli had chosen a colourful rug for daughter Nina’s room, the paint colours pretty much chose themselves.

A wall painted in stripes of Resene Boutique and Resene Gin Fizz became the focus of the room with accents in Resene Wild Thing and Resene Smitten. The trims, window surrounds and furniture were then painted in Resene Alabaster.

The walls in the room were a faded lilac colour, which made the room feel small and drab. So, when Nina moved out of the cot and into a big girl bed, it seemed like the perfect time to breathe some new life into her room. Mum Emily did most of the work, and wanted the room to be bright and happy.

The dusty pink and muted yellow walls provided the perfect backdrop for a few fun colours and accessories. The room is decorated with mostly upcycled bargain items (including the $20 bed!). Emily’s mum pitched in, making the curtains and crochet items.
