Cosy wooden Wanaka home’s makeover in Resene neutrals inspired by the snowy landscape

Enveloped by the mountains and sitting lakeside in Wanaka, Maggie and Lawrence’s home needed a colour palette to match their picturesque setting. Resene Foggy Grey and Resene Half Periglacial Blue from the Karen Walker Paints collection complement the cosiness and warmth of their interior timbers.

“This new family home in Wanaka included a combination of rustic elements in the interior, with exposed Central Otago stonework and New Zealand elm ceiling timber features throughout the living and dining area,” says interior designer, Nina Cotter.

Designing and building their dream family home required a team effort; Lawrence and Maggie project managed the build, with Lawrence building alongside local builder Richard (Rich the Builder) Taal. Nina’s wealth of design experience was welcomed when it came to designing the home’s interior and picking their Resene colours.

Nina, who also works at Timbers of NZ, was happy to include feature timber. “Lawrence and Maggie selected NZ-grown elm timber for the ceiling to add warmth and texture.” The elm from Timbers of New Zealand was harvested from local and sustainable woodlots located in the South Island.

“We needed a colour scheme that would work with the home’s rustic feel and existing family heirlooms and furniture. With the views of Lake Wanaka and surrounding mountains from the living, dining and master bedroom, the interior scheme needed to be cosy, but not detract from the view.” Nina says.

Enter the softness of Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Foggy Grey from the Karen Walker Paints collection for the living room and hallway. “The central design element the clients wanted to include was the solid timber ceiling. Resene Foggy Grey was chosen to complement the timber and connect to the stone elements in the lounge and hallway.” Bookshelves painted in Resene Black White opposite the hallway’s stonework are crisp and striking.

In the kitchen, Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to frosted silver grey Resene Concrete gives a wet cement look, and draws the eye to the beauty and warmth of the elm timber ceiling. “The use of a locally sourced timber provides a textural feature with warmth and character, and is a nice change from an all plasterboard ceiling.”

In the home’s bedrooms, Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Half Periglacial Blue from the Karen Walker Paints collection continues the subtle and neutral palette. “With lake views from most rooms, the idea was to keep the colours soft. A soft blue for the master bedroom was a request from Maggie, and Resene Half Periglacial Blue works well with the timber furniture in this room.”

Nina used Resene paints as she says she’s always appreciated the diversity of colours. “The clients Lawrence and Maggie were thrilled to move into their new home, and were very happy with the final outcome and the way the materials came together.”

Top tip: While natural timber looks beautiful, it needs to be protected to keep it looking its best. These days there are many natural looking finishes available from Resene, which bear the brunt of the wear and tear, as well as making the surface easier to clean especially in areas where moss, mould and dust are likely. Or you can use a wood stain to enhance or rejuvenate the timber colour. It is much easier to apply more stain or clear finish than it is to replace timber.

Resene Qristal polyurethanes impart a yellow tone to timber so are suited to timbers with a yellow, orange or red undertone like cedar, rimu, eucalyptus and jarrah. If you want a waxed look but without the hassle of waxing, use two or three coats of Resene Qristal Clear Polyurethane Flat. For whiter interior timbers, such as plywood and pine, Resene Aquaclear waterborne urethane.  Use Resene Colorwood to enhance the timber colour or the Resene Colorwood wash range to add a weathered look.
