Exteriors: rebels with a cause

There are pretty house exteriors, simple house exteriors, ones that blend with the landscape, then there are others that demand a second look. Strong, handsome exteriors that exude confidence. And they’re not afraid to include a shot of Resene colour, unexpected details or an interesting combo of Resene stains.

These three exteriors are great examples of that sort of muscular look… but with a twist.

Just slightly subversive

For Cameron Driver of Maximarc this project initially gave limited opportunity for exterior colour. Colours were restricted under the subdivision covenants to those that receded against a hilly green backdrop. The dark-stained timber upper storey complies (get the look with Resene Treehouse) but that didn’t stop a bit of rebellion setting in.

The house has a number of angled setbacks in the façades for shelter, ventilation and access, and the upper floor overhangs the lower. This created a series of physically discrete soffit areas of differing sizes and shapes. Splashes of colour could be used in these areas but not fall foul of the covenants – in Resene Red Berry, Resene Malibu, Resene Atoll and Resene Fruit Salad.

The garage block is clad in corten steel panels and while it’s orange now, it will darken to a more sober dark red. Resene Lignite on the garage door echoes this reddish brown. A small area of Resene Hint of Grey on the lower storey walls is neutral and complementary.

Boldly going…

Using a bold red stain, Resene Totem Pole, on the exterior of an addition to a suburban home certainly wouldn’t be your first expectation. But this surprising result had a very reasoned beginning. The existing house is clad in red brick, which was the starting point for Sam Williams of Cook Sargisson Pirie & Williams Architects. Their clients were interested in using a bold colour and so Sam very quickly started looking at more intense reds.

Impressed by the depth of colour of the Resene Woodsman Stain range, they started experimenting with customised stain colours. The eventual conclusion? The standard Resene Woodsman colour Resene Totem Pole could not be improved upon.

The addition also has an unusual profile. Clad in band-sawn plywood with cedar battens over the sheet joints, the battens are much deeper than is standard.

The windows and doors sit within the module determined by the plywood sheet sizes. The addition houses a new living area and master bedroom, which open onto a timber deck and rear garden. This joinery is clear finished timber.

Framed!

For an urban, bush-clad site in Warkworth north of Auckland, BK Design chose vertical timber cladding for this home but chose to emphasise the recesses in the front and back of the house with a change in stain colour. For the ‘frame’ of the recess, they used Wood-X in colour Kauri Gum, available from Resene, and for the inside of the frame, they used Wood-X in colour Foundry.

The recesses not only look great but provide shade and shelter, while giving a sense of depth to the façade. Their impact is reinforced with the use of a darker cladding colour.

The house won a national award at last year’s ADNZ (Architectural Designers of NZ) awards, and features in the ADNZ Defign book.

Hits of colour peek out from the soffits of this striking home designed by Cameron Driver of Maximarc – the green on the triangular soffit is Resene Atoll, on the bottom soffits are Resene Fruit Salad (green on the left), and Resene Red Berry on the right. The garage frame is corten steel, the lower floor is painted in Resene Hint of Grey, the garage door revels are Resene Lignite and the stain look can be replicated with Resene Treehouse.

A closer look at the Resene Atoll soffit on the upper floor.

And the Resene Red Berry soffit, looking stunning against the stained cedar and corten steel.

The homeowner’s love of strong colour, and architect Sam Williams of Cook Sargisson Pirie & Williams ability to explore the options, resulted in Resene Woodsman Totem Pole red stain used for the addition of this house. The interior timber is finished in Resene Aquaclear.

Band-sawn plywood and over-sized battens stained in Resene Woodsman Totem Pole red is an unusual but fitting treatment for this addition.

Two stain colours (Wood-X Kauri Gum and Wood-X Foundry, available from Resene) add extra emphasis to the framing effect of the architecture in this design by BK Design.
