Keep the bees buzzing
29 Aug 2013
Our honeybees are dying, and an initiative by the Auckland City Council aims to do something about it. Nature’s pollinators, bees are vital for maintaining our beautiful native plants, gardens and for our multi-million dollar agricultural export industry. But bees are falling victim to insecticides and the savage varroa mite. Their natural environment and food supplies are also disappearing. Aucklanders are being encouraged to host hives, to plant bee-friendly gardens, and not use sprays that are harmful to bees. Here’s an interesting fact: Did you know that the reason hives are often painted a range of different bright colour is so the bee knows which hive to return to? That way, beekeepers can keep the numbers of bees consistent across the various hives.
