Make your own terracotta chandelier

19 May 2022

This DIY terracotta chandelier is a quirky way to display plants from a height and looks great filled with herbs and flowers. Paint your pots in bright tones like Resene Meteor and enjoy the new touch of colour in your garden.

Resene Meteor is bright and bold on this DIY garden chandelier.

You will need:

  • Old chandelier
  • 3 terracotta pots and 3 saucers
  • Sandpaper
  • Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer
  • Paintbrush
  • Resene Aquapel & Terracotta Sealer
  • Industrial adhesive
  • Resene testpot paint in your choice of colour (Fleur used Resene Meteor)
  • Plants

How to:

Step 1: Take your chandelier and remove the light shades, then strip out the electrical wires and remove the light bulb holders.

Step 2: Paint the chandelier with a coat of Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer.

Step 3: Seal the pots and saucers with Resene Aquapel & Terracotta Sealer and once dry, use industrial adhesive to glue the saucers to the lamp plates on the chandelier.

Step 4: Paint the chandelier and pots with two or three coats of Resene Meteor, allowing for the first coat to dry before applying the second coat. Fleur didn’t paint the middle of the saucers or the bottom of the pots so she could give the adhesive the best chance of adhering.

Step 5: Glue the pots to the saucers.  Make sure you only use a few dabs of glue rather than a continuous bead of glue around the bottom of the pots. This way the water can drain out and away from the pot.

Step 6: Leave the adhesive to dry overnight and then fill your pots with your favourite flowering plant. Enjoy!
