What a transformation: This charming 159-year-old Victorian cottage gets a peaceful modern makeover

Tindalls Cottage in Berry was once the home of the town’s first mayor, James Wilson. But while it started its life in 1862 as the pride of the small village on the south coast of New South Wales, when Brad and Jodie bought the cottage over a century later in 2019 it was a little worse for wear. Its peachy yellow exterior was blotchy, the green roof was flaking, and the house was in desperate need of some TLC. Brad and Jodie called in colour consultant and interior designer Asha Ardill from South Coast Colour to transform the cottage into a classic yet chic family with Resene Washed Green and Resene Peace. It now houses an abundance of colour that the mayor would be proud of.

Though Resene Peace is a hero colour of the renovation, this is a busy home. Brad and Jodie live in the home with their three children, 23-year-old James, 22-year-old Maggie and 19-year-old Laura, as well as border collies Millie and Archie – AKA Lick and Stick – and a coop full of chickens. The biggest challenge to interior designer Asha was creating a modern atmosphere while still complying with the local government heritage requirements. To tackle this, she researched thoroughly looking at written historical records as well as referencing colours Victorian-era landscape paintings.

“The clients were clear it was to be a contemporary family home, one that belongs at that address but also belongs to them,” says Asha, who painted the exterior in Resene Washed Green with Resene Half New Denim Blue on the front door and Resene Ecru White on the trim.

“In my mind’s eye I could see the misty clouds and washed-out greens from a Victorian landscape painting and set out to replicate this.”

Colour choices were limited by “local council restrictions and it was tough to find colours that were not repetitive on the street. The client was keen to be unique yet compliant and colours that belonged whilst expressing their personal tastes. The balance was tough, but we found it. I believe it is the depth and interest of Resene bases that give additional visual gravitas and presence to the most classic combinations.”

Once the exterior colour scheme had been cleared by the council, Asha turned her attention to the interiors. With the original dark floorboards still intact, the home had excellent potential but lacked natural light. She introduced bright Resene Pearl Lusta, a bright neutral with a hint of yellow, into the new kitchen and dining extension, as well as incorporating it into the bedrooms. The trim throughout the house is in Resene Quarter Pearl Lusta and the ceilings are in Resene Eighth Pearl Lusta. She continued the interior flow with Resene Half Pearl Lusta in the master bedroom, bathroom, ensuite and laundry.

“The bedrooms needed Resene Pearl Lusta to lift them and make the most out of the natural light and it had the richness we needed,” says Asha.

“It has the most amazing capacity to reveal layers of interest from shadows to bright spaces.

“I am very happy with the relationship between the exterior and interior colour schemes. They are not matching schemes, but they are in sync as they both relate to the cottage’s story and history as well as its place in the landscape.”

With an interior style that’s authentic and cottagey Brad and Jodie have a keen interest in sustainability. Not only do the couple enjoy filling their home with an eclectic mix of antique furniture, but they’ve also re-used materials from the kitchen renovation to build a barn door and French doors, cedar windows and a garden shed. Their new kitchen and dining extension fills the home with light and the feature wall in Resene Peace provides a connection to nature. “I love Resene Peace, it looks completely different in different situations and lighting,” says Jodie. “It positively glows at night-time, it’s a lovely calming colour.”

Resene Peace flows onto the walls in the hallway, where it creates a dramatic yet seamless connection between the original cottage and modern extension. “Resene Peace is rich and fulfilling in colour, with pretty dappled light during the day from the entrance,” says Asha. “It’s a rich velvety green that is the perfect conduit between old and new.

“It has strong presence while embracing its surroundings, holding its own against the dark brown floors as well as hitting the concept of being like a 19th century landscape painting.”

“The client, like me, loves colour and we wanted to evoke a mood and sense of history while also having welcoming colours for a family home,” says Asha, who infused some of her own interior style she calls Country Boho into the design. She shares some good advice for those wanting to renovate a heritage home. “Layering is key and use colours that are active and fun. Look at the art of the period and to help formulate your colour palette.”

“Do your homework,” homeowner Jodie adds. “And if you’re doing an extension don’t be afraid to go modern – it can be really hard sometimes and impractical to attempt a cottage style when wanting a light-filled, open space.”

Top tip: When renovating heritage houses be wary that most paints prior to the 1960s contain lead, which can cause health issues. You can purchase a lead based paint test kit from your local Resene ColorShop to check the paint on your project before you start preparing the surface for repainting. Always wear a mask and gloves if sanding old paint, and make sure lead paint chips do not fall into garden areas to contaminate soil. Or consider hiring a professional painter to prepare the surface safely for you. For further information visit Lead Based Paint Removal - Paint Safety (resene.co.nz)
