Wow, wow, wow! This 1893 villa’s Victorian-inspired colour palette is a must-see

Rachel’s home is rich in history, having long peered out towards Auckland’s harbour on Buchanan Street. One of Devonport’s earliest villas, the iconic home’s interior has just received a head-to-toe makeover in Resene paints. “The Victorian era is deeply embedded in this home both in spirit and within the character features, so that’s where I began,” Rachel says. Hues like Resene Bounty,Resene Dark Slate and Resene Loblolly stun on its walls.

The villa is home to Rachel and her two kids, Elias (9) and Ivy (8). The property has been home to many, originally built in 1893 by an early settler who started his career as an apprentice builder. He was later seduced by the discoveries of gold in Coromandel. Later, the home served as Devonport’s maternity hospital for 50 years.

“I let the house speak for itself,” says Rachel. “I did a lot of research on Victorian interiors and once I’d found the perfect traditional palette, I began to compare those colours to their modern-day counterparts. To be honest, I went through dozens of Resene testpots in each room but that’s standard for me – I rarely end up painting a room the colour with which I first envisioned for it.”

Rachel says she always knew her villa needed colour. Before the painting renovation, the interior was painted in a medley of pale greys, lacklustre beiges and stark white. The house felt unloved and its rooms lacking in purpose when the family first moved in. It called for a renovation, where Rachel drew on her life living in London. “In London there’s an enormous amount of beautiful, high-quality apartments housed in Georgian and Victorian era buildings and that’s what we wanted to emulate.”

To maximise the home’s potential, Rachel converted it into two separate residences, each with its own identity, but still connected and family friendly.

“It was incredibly important to me that the colours were reflective of the home’s era and sympathetic to its heritage. I wanted the palette and style to discreetly reflect its history as a former maternity hospital, but present more like a modern-day boutique hotel. Rich colour in every room was essential because traditional Victorian homes didn’t feature white walls, ever.”

Resene Bounty is the star in the living room and master bedroom, a soft steel blue. “The formal living room is so bright and warm, so it required a deep, cooler shade to help balance this. I wanted the master bedroom to feel moody and sensual and Resene Bounty ticked all these boxes.”

In Elias’ bedroom, Rachel chose Resene Loblolly for the walls. “I wanted something quite bright for Elias’ bedroom but had to carefully consider the pre-existing features.” Resene Jet Stream was chosen for Ivy’s bedroom, vibrant and playful.

Rachel’s favourite hue is in the villa is in the home office, Resene Dark Slate. The colour is dark, sultry and sophisticated. Resene Black makes a statement and is stunning on the staircase and all internal doorframes.

In the kitchen Resene Eighth Lemon Grass is fresh and modern. “This shade is so pleasant and it’s a colour that seems to resonate with everyone who experiences it, male or female. It’s so versatile and relaxing.”

Downstairs, in the home’s converted apartment, Resene Half Caraway sings on the walls of the master bedroom and in the hallway. “I used Resene Half Caraway in these spaces because they receive the least light. The result is fantastic. This colour is so natural and warm, it’s inviting and all encompassing; the colour beautifully reflects the light from the mirrored wardrobe doors creating the most tranquil space.” Rachel used the full colour Resene Caraway in the other bedrooms, as they receive more light than the master so could tolerate a slightly richer tone.

In the apartment’s living room, Resene Half Evolution was picked for the walls. “What’s not to love about this gorgeous earthy olive. This colour beautifully complements all the other colours used throughout and feels so harmonious. It works perfectly with the amber coloured Kauri floorboards, fireplace and pendant. I think the end result is stunning.” Resene Quarter Fossil, a beige-green, is soft and subtle in the bathrooms and kitchen.

Rachel’s personal style is modern, and she’s a dedicated colour enthusiast. “One of my favourite artists, Wassily Kandinsky once said: ‘Colour is a power which directly influences the soul’, and I genuinely believe this. When applied thoughtfully, colour can radiate joy, induce calm, lift your spirits, or fill you with a sense of peace. It’s such a powerful visual tool.”

Rachel and her children are just about to move on from their home, now the project and conversion is complete. “This house is an absolute delight to live in, it's warm, dry, spacious and has the most beautiful sense of spirit. It's the best vibe of any home I've ever lived in. The sunsets here are nothing short of magical.”

Resene Eighth Lemon Grass is subtle and soothing in the lounge opposite the dining area, with Resene Black White on ceilings and trims. “It’s not too bright or stark, Resene Black White is my favourite ‘pure white’,” Rachel says.

“Because the top floor is elevated above street level, it’s blessed with natural light from sunrise to dusk. It’s incredibly warm and in the summer months. That’s why I chose very deep, rich, dark colours for the northern side. These colours help to visually balance the temperature and alleviate harsh glare. I then built the palette for the rest of the home around the core colours.” Resene Eighth Lemon Grass is painted on the walls, Resene Black White on the ceiling and trims and Resene Black on the staircase.

Resene Eighth Lemon Grass is soothing in the kitchen, continued from the lounge, and complements the cabinetry. Bring greyed greens into your kitchen with Resene Cutty Sark or Resene Stromboli. The ceiling and trims are in Resene Black White.

“The history of the home is so special and unique as are the incredible character features. It maintains original stained-glass windows, 3.6m studs, a grand entrance hall and a huge section,” says Rachel.”  The hallway walls are finished in Resene Eighth Lemon Grass with Resene Black White on the ceiling and trims.

Resene Bounty shines in the living room, the soft steel blue balancing the room’s brightness and warmth from the sun. Resene Black White is on the ceiling and trims.

“I wanted the master bedroom to feel moody and sensual and Resene Bounty ticked all these boxes,” says Rachel. Ceiling and trims in Resene Black White and door in Resene Black.

Resene Loblolly is a winter grey, icy and crystalline used on the walls in this bedroom. The ceiling and trims are in Resene Black White.

“For Ivy’s room I wanted something vibrant and playful.” Resene Jet Stream was picked, with Resene Black White on the trims and ceiling.

“My favourite room is unquestionably the home office. This is the brightest, warmest space in the house, and I have painted the entire room in Resene Dark Slate. This space exudes calm and fills me with happiness, working in here is an absolute delight.” Trims and ceiling in Resene Black White.

Resene Tasman is painted on the walls in the home’s bathrooms, with Resene Black White on the ceiling and trims. “Peaceful and aquatic, this colour is perfect for bathrooms and laundry spaces,” says Rachel.

“The apartment is at ground level and although it still receives a generous amount of natural light, aesthetically it feels much cooler. It originally had dark grey carpet that absorbed all the beautiful daylight and pure white walls which made it feel very cold and clinical. It felt emotionless and lacked both personality and style. It was clear to me that this space required colours to help lift its spirits, reflect the sunlight and radiate warmth.” Resene Half Caraway was used in the master bedroom and Resene Caraway in the other two bedrooms.

Resene Half Evolution is downstairs in the living room, with Resene Black White on the ceiling and trims. “What’s not to love about this gorgeous earthy olive. This colour beautifully complements all the other colours used throughout and feels so harmonious. It works perfectly with the amber coloured Kauri floorboards, fireplace and pendant. I think the end result is stunning.”
