Ben and Kate bring harmony to their Californian-style bungalow

When Ben and Kate Campion set about building their new home, they not only based it on the look of a character Californian-style bungalow but decided to create their own colour scheme and decorate the interior themselves.

After countless hours of research finding homes and appliances that they loved as inspiration, the couple decided on Resene Quarter Villa White for the main living areas – complementing the creamy white retro appliances in the kitchen – and soft, watery Resene blues in the bedrooms. To finish, they have filled the home with decor that they love rather than trendy items, creating a cosy and harmonious feel.

Kate tells us more.

How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors?

We wanted a house that felt like a home – traditional, cosy and relaxed, while also not being fussy or cluttered.  It’s a sanctuary for us and our adult kids whenever they might need it, where they feel like this is their home base.

We were also determined to build the house for us and our needs. That meant no fourth bedroom or extra living area. Everyone hangs out in the living room together. The main philosophy for me for this home is all about family.

What Resene colours and products have you used, and what inspired those choices?

Our Smeg retro appliances influenced our colour choices. We had already bought the fridge, oven, rangehood and dishwasher, but they were a cream colour and I wasn’t sure exactly what shade and how I would make this work with my desire for white walls.

To get the colour of the appliances we went into Kitchen Things with a collection of swatches from the Resene Whites & Neutrals range and matched it to Resene Villa White. We then went into the Resene ColorShop in Cambridge and the colour consultant helped us work out the main house colours – Resene Quarter Villa White for all the walls, Resene Quarter Bianca for the trims and doors, and Resene Eighth Rice Cake for the ceiling.

In addition, I took in our mint green Smeg jug and she matched it as Resene Mint Tulip – I was determined to have the back of the kitchen cabinet painted in that colour.

The master bedroom is Resene Opal. In early 2016 we went to the Raglan Arts Weekend, and as part of this we visited the home of Waikato artist Jane Galloway. Jane’s interior was painted totally in Resene Opal and we absolutely loved the colour. We also bought a print which has an opal background and this has pride of place in the bedroom.

Our daughter Zoe’s bedroom is painted in Resene Half Opal to keep in tone with ours. Our son Ben’s bedroom is painted in Resene Cut Glass. I had so many home and garden magazines and one featured a spread using Resene Cut Glass which I loved. The lighter colour also suits the lighter room.

What part of the house are you happiest with?

I love the whole house, but the kitchen is my favourite space. I have actually developed a love of cooking since moving in here. The view from the kitchen as I prepare meals makes me happy and calm. I also love the window seat – although the dog and cat sit on it way more than we ever do.

What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?

My main advice is to search online to get those common features you love. Then search through magazines and rip out pages, cut them out and create mood boards. I look at the kitchen mood board I created and my kitchen is almost identical.

Buy things you love, not things that are on trend. When we built this house, cool whites were in and to go warm white was so against everything I was seeing in magazines. But there’s a beautiful warmth to the walls that we love.

We did our build labour-only, so we were fully involved in every single choice with the look of the house. If I hadn’t had a clear vision. then deciding things like door handles and tapware would have been overwhelming.

What was the biggest challenge for this project?

The sheer range of decisions. As we only had help with the labour so I spent hours poring over quotes, going to stores, etc.

In saying that, I now look at everything in this house and it reflects the choices we made. It’s impossible not to feel more connected to a space when you have put so much energy into creating it.

Apart from that the build was very straightforward thanks to our fantastic builders. We kept to our budget and timeline.

Do you have a favourite colour, and if so why is it your favourite?

Resene Opal. I love that it’s connected with our anniversary (we bought the art for an anniversary gift to ourselves). That aside, I love the soothing colour.

How did you find working with Resene paint and colours?

Fantastic – and a huge thank you to our Resene colour consultant who made it all come together for us.

Is there anyone you would like mentioned?

The architect Lee Turner of Turner Road Architecture as well as Rob May Builders – both awesome to deal with.
