Chris and Janet unlock the perfect colour
When Chris and Janet Gardner renovated their sumptuous looking villa, their interior design problems were solved in one fell swoop – with the discovery of Resene Thorndon Cream.
As they declare when asked about the colours used in their home: “The answer has always been easy – Resene Thorndon Cream, in various strengths, both inside and out!”
Adds Janet: “Resene Thorndon Cream is a glorious grey/green-based cream which when used with the matai floors and the natural hemp/linen drapes lent itself perfectly to the subtlety I was trying to achieve.”
Opting or a subtle yet rich tonal colour scheme was a deliberate attempt to steer away from the bolder heritage colours of the late Victorian/early Edwardian era in which the house was originally built.
Janet studied the natural light levels in all of the rooms, then used either Resene Thorndon Cream or Resene Double Thorndon Cream.
She then used Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream for the ceilings, ceiling roses, coving and walls down to the picture rails. The actual picture rail was picked out in Resene Triple Thorndon Cream for definition.
The window architraves and frames, wooden shutters (the couple paid extra to have the shutters matching the frames), skirting boards and doors are Resene Half Thorndon Cream.
Top tip: Other colours from the Resene Whites & Neutrals collection come in up to six variant strengths – the perfect way to build a tonal colour scheme like the Gardner’s.
The couple’s love affair with the colour continues outside where all variants of Resene Thorndon Cream are used. Even the perimeter fence is painted in Resene Thorndon Cream.
The two points of colour difference are the veranda floorboards, which are in Resene Non Skid Deck and Path tinted to Resene Shuttle Grey.
The renovation was designed by Aaron Guerin from local Cambridge company LAD Architecture. The villa was a run-down rabbit warren of rooms with a lean-to extension at the back.
Now, its large open-plan living spaces cater for the Gardner’s collection of antique furniture, and the villa’s elegant original features like the ceiling roses, fretwork and finials have been carefully incorporated into the look. It’s now a seamless transition between original and new elements, including a new double garage designed to be sympathetic to the original look.
The design won LAD Architecture a natural award from ADNZ (Architectural Designers of New Zealand) last year. As the judges said: “Guerin’s tasteful and sympathetic treatment has turned a cold, draughty villa into an elegant period example – a delightful heirloom home. The transformation is striking.”

The deeper the strength of Resene Thorndon Cream, the greener it becomes, as seen with this picture rail in Resene Triple Thorndon Cream in the bathroom. A free-standing bath and crystal ball light are both contemporary and classic.
Beautifully considered furnishings accessories the house throughout, even in the entrance hall. The walls are Resene Double Thorndon Cream with trims in Resene Half Thorndon Cream and upper walls and ceiling in Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream. The picture rail is Resene Triple Thorndon Cream.
A massive old clock face motif is a fun element on the kitchen splashback where the walls are a mix of Resene Double Thorndon Cream and Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream.
The house is set into gardens designed by Tina McHarg, with only white-flowering plants allowed.
Even the boundary fences are in Resene Thorndon Cream, with posts in Resene White.
