Embracing nostalgia to build a future
When two homeowners and first-time builders, along with the design team at Box™ set out to create their forever home, what unfolded was not just a structure of bricks and mortar but a sanctuary infused with memories and personal touches reminiscent of their childhood homes.
What started as a blank canvas quickly evolved into a homage to cherished memories. Every design decision carried the weight of their past, shaping the future they envisioned for their family. The essence of their previous homes lingered in the air, guiding their choices and infusing warmth into every corner.

Choosing the colour palette was an important task that would define the ambiance of each living space. With the guidance of the Box™ team, the homeowners chose a range of charming Resene paints to breathe life into their vision.
In the TV den, where family movie nights are cherished, Resene Indian Ink sets the stage. Its deep, calming hue envelops the room, creating a sanctuary for relaxation and shared laughter. The walls echo the comfort of a cave, inviting occupants to unwind and immerse themselves in cinematic adventures.

For the en-suite bathroom, a moodier shade of blue was chosen, Resene Coast. The room transforms into a realm of luxury and drama. Despite its modest dimensions, the bold colour scheme commands attention, diverting focus from size to style. It's a masterful play of hues that elevates the space, turning routine rituals into indulgent escapes.
In the master bedroom, the blue theme continues with a sense of serenity and sophistication. The blue and white theme lends weight and depth to the room, accentuating the dramatic lines of the raked ceiling. Tranquillity finds its home amidst soft textures and harmonious tones, offering a retreat from the demands of the day.
Even the children's bedrooms are touched by the soothing embrace of colour. A concrete-grey palette envelops the space, fostering a sense of calm and contentment. Through the subtle interplay of hues, the colour palette transforms these ordinary rooms into calm spaces where young imaginations can flourish.

What began as a mere structure has evolved into a home infused with nostalgia and personal resonance. Through the careful selection of Resene paints, Terri and Sam's vision came to life, creating spaces that exude peace, balance, and the timeless beauty of cherished memories.

Top tip:
Thinking of trying a dark shade in your home, but don’t know what to pick? These examples, mostly from the Resene Whites & Neutrals collection, highlight the different types of dark neutrals and their effects:
Charcoals: Such as Resene Gravel, Resene Double Stack and Resene Tuna. Flinty and sophisticated, these colours provide a cool, urban edginess.
Deep, deep brown: Like Resene Bokara Grey, Resene Oilskin and Resene Mondo. If true black feels too severe and cool, these types of colours have a soothing warmth… like coffee or chocolate.
A touch of green: Some of the darker neutrals in the Resene colour collections have an edge of green, making them earthy and interesting, for example Resene Swamp, Resene Tapa or Resene Masala. These colours give a more earthy twist to darker neutrals and can look quite different from room to room depending on the light.
