A garden recreated
In the Spring/Summer '17 issue of habitat, we feature an impressive potager garden that keeps its homeowners fed with delicious organic fruit and veges growing all through the year. We asked two experts to reimagine the look of the garden courtyard, with the help of Resene paint and products and additional accessories. Paul Roper-Gee of Canopy went for the cool and contemporary approach, while landscape designer Meg Kane brought a vintage charm to her scheme. Here are their designs.

The original
Juliet and Ken's potager garden takes over their back yard in full bountiful force. The old playhouse is painted in stripes of Resene Cream Can and Resene House White on a background of Resene Comfort Zone. Image by Juliet Nicholas.
Juliet and Ken decided on raised beds for the plots to increase the soil temperature, as well as being in view from the living room and kitchen windows. "We're constantly observing and feeling connected to our plants," says Juliet.
Against the jewel-coloured flora and stripy veges, their home is a beautiful moody colour scheme of Resene Quarter Stonehenge trimmed in Resene Alabaster. The garden fence is stained in Resene Waterborne Woodsman Shadow Match.
Paul's look
Designed to be place a to reflect and to entertain, Paul's alternative scheme is cool, calm and contemporary. He's formed the garden plan around two contrasting but complementary outdoor living spaces.
An outdoor gas fire table in the middle of the sunny and open concrete seating area makes for a great social space. The bluestone plinth water feature is the 'reflection' part of the scheme, and is centred in the garden so as to be seen from the house. He's back-dropped this with tall grasses and perennials to add texture, colour and movement.
Paul has chosen Resene Quarter Foundry for the exterior, with trims and pergola in Resene Sea Fog and the roof in Resene Foundry. The concrete seating is stained in Resene Concrete Stain Bleached Grey.
The plants in Paul's scheme include canna lily, box hedging, Miscanthus 'Morning Light', plume poppy, Helichrysum petiolare, fig and smoke bush. It's a zen and inviting space, with a contemporary touch – choose colours such as Resene Red It, Resene Foundry and Resene Energise. Meg's look
This garden design is a piece of vintage luxe, inspired by the lovely rustic/barn look that's popular right now. For this look, Meg says to mix up weighty aged materials, such as reclaimed timber, with simple soft planting and a straightforward layout – it's all about being relaxed and easy to achieve.
Meg's garden redesign is a balance of hard and soft, with raw concrete softened by fig trees and nonchalant planting of flowering shrubs and perennials. The striking Resene Nero on the exterior and Resene Alabaster on the French Country doors brings it into the now. The wide veranda is finished with Resene Furniture and Decking Oil.
Romantic colours set off this colour scheme... look to Resene Native, Resene Balance and Resene Limerick. Get the look with plants that bring about a French Country feel, including white echinacea and lavender grosso. Other products include large copper plant pots from Dunedin Sheet Metals and a vintage outdoor table from Artwood.
