Kirsty and David's story of old and new
David and Kirsty Wraight have the best of both worlds. Building a villa from scratch will give you that, melding old world charm with the joys of modern housing.
Set in Marlborough's Fairhall District, the home is wrapped in classic lines of rusticated weatherboard, crisply finished in Resene Kangaroo, and scrolls in Resene Kokoda.
Despite being one of the newest builds on the block, you could mistake it for having stood there for hundreds of years. It's a great example of David's craftmanship... his business, David Wraight Cottages, is, after all, building replica villas.
David's taken the look of an original homestead and completed it with the comforts of a contemporary build, including open-plan living areas designed for sun and views and a home stuffed to the gunnels with insulation.
Inside, the theme of old and new continues throughout, from an oil painting by Kirsty's great grandfather hanging on the walls to furniture passed down through the family recovered in rich fabrics.
For the paint palette Kirsty chose pumice whites, sea foam greens and quiet touches of taupe. It sets a dreamy mood, with a slice of the bolder Resene Spanish Green in the formal dining area to delineate the space.
Resene Quarter Carrara above the dado line in the main living area keeps it light, and is decorated with industrial lights and shades in copper and steel.
For those in love with classic architecture, the home's bathroom will appeal. The tongue and groove panels are painted in soft blue-grey Resene Hermitage, with a board and batten feature wall painted in Resene Quarter Carrara behind the bath tub. It's a blissful combo, and took Kirsty a bit longer to decide on the colours. It was well worth it.
As much as this is a dream house by anyone's standards, it's been revealed that David's real dream would be to live in "a lighthouse on a rock somewhere,” says Kirsty. As this isn't likely to happen any time soon, their beautiful villa is the next best thing.
