Living room, 3 ways
When Trudie and Mike Nettle moved into their Hawke’s Bay home, with kids in tow, all of the walls and trims were painted in white Resene Alabaster. Trudie was keen to inject colour into the home, to express her own personality as well as creating a happy home for her family. We feature the interiors of the house, a joyous jumble of colour, in the Summer 2014/15 issue of habitat magazine. Here, we look at the Nettle’s bright living room, as well as have two experts suggest alternative schemes.
Industrial chic
Sydney-based designer Meg Tuckett suggested this industrial chic scheme, choosing to use a ‘true grey’ (Resene Armadillo) as a feature wall to frame everything in the room. Although dark, Resene Armadillo does have warm undertones. A ‘warm grey’ (Resene
Eighth Tapa) is then used on the other walls as a perfect complement for most of the furnishing colours, especially the pink and bright whites. It also works well with the natural timbers to really warm up the room.
The room is quite sophisticated but also contemporary and comfortable. The timber floor, finished in Resene Colorwood Teak stain, grounds this scheme and is balanced by other timber elements, such as the furniture. Resene Double Alabaster is Meg’s go-to colour for ceilings and trims. It has warmth and is the ‘perfect white’, she says.
Or colour block crazy
Ursula Vlasic of Yellowfox suggests going colour block crazy in this smart living room, using the blocking effect to help disguise the window.
The colours chosen were from the new Resene The Range fashion colours 16 fandeck – (from left) Resene Scoria, Resene Double Drought, Resene Wild Thing (yellow), Resene Boutique and Resene Triple Rakaia.
It’s fun to play with colour in an area like this. It can be easily repainted when the moment passes or your tastes change. These colours only pop when balanced by the right white, which Ursula chose as Resene Double Alabaster for its warmth.
“It’s best to have neutral well-designed furniture that will last, and then experiment with paint colours. The over-scale pendant light over the coffee table creates a focal point, centered to the room, to add scale and balance.”
