Nick and Ingrid's dreamy, close-to-nature new build
For many years, Nick and Ingrid dreamed of the perfect home – open and fresh, with a great indoor/outdoor flow; a place to enjoy the breeze in summer, and cuddle up by the fire in winter.
They turned to Waller Projects to help them realise this dream, on a peaceful rural property in West Auckland. The natural bush surroundings called for a beautifully soft palette of Resene Half Thorndon Cream and Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream and other natural hues and textures. And Nick and Ingrid say that they love every aspect of living there.
The build wasn't without its challenges, though. The house is built up on a ridge overlooking 3Ha and the major challenge was laying the foundations for the house slab. Loads of extra concrete piles added considerable cost and the foundations to anchor the house there were extensive, but the outcome and single level living has made it all worthwhile for the couple.
The modern and contemporary home impressed judges at the Master Builders House of the Year Award 2015. Waller Projects was awarded a silver medal in the category of New Home $500,00-$650,000 for the Auckland region.
Ingrid tells us more about the beautiful property.
How did the project come about?
Our new home has been a few years in the making and finally, in 2014, we were able to turn our dreams into reality. We wanted something that was simple, clean and fresh, and would stand the test of time; a base where we are free to add colour and evolve as and when we need a change. At the moment, it's greens, woods and greys. We also wanted a home that can handle kids, pets, entertaining, etc.
We moved into our new home at the end of 2014 and have loved every moment. The next project is landscaping!
What part of the house are you most happy with?
The kitchen and living area. It's the belly of our home where we love to cook, eat, entertain, or just relax quietly in front of the fire.
What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?
Keep it simple and use a paint colour that won’t date too quickly. Leave it quite neutral so that you can bang in colour when needed with your accessories and art.
Who was involved in the build?
Waller Project, our builders. They were there rain, hail and shine. The workmanship, dedication, commitment and personalities made it a great experience. We also used Jenny Harris of Design Front, whose expertise and advice was invaluable.

Open and inviting, with a soft internal palette, the living room and kitchen is 'the belly' of the home where everyone tends to gather. The walls were painted in Resene Half Thorndon Cream, a highly versatile off-white from the Resene Whites & Neutrals range. Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream, a sharp white, was used for the ceiling, trims and doors.
The home has a contemporary and Scandinavian feel, with a mix of textured materials in soft, natural tones. Resene Half Thorndon Cream on the walls creates a lovely and light atmosphere throughout.
Although bold, the Damask-style wallpaper in Nick and Ingrid's bedroom doesn't overwhelm, and is nicely balanced with the soft Resene Half Thorndon Cream on the other walls. The wallpaper is Vision Camarque (48656) and is available from selected Resene ColorShops.
The second bedroom has a dreamier feel, with Elements (46524) wallpaper also from Resene ColorShops. It blends beautifully with the walls in Resene Half Thorndon Cream and trims in Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream.
They chose Elements (46520) wallpaper for the walls of the entryway, also from Resene. It sets the tone of the home's colour palette, rich in natural hues.
Ingrid chose Resene Mellow Yellow, her favourite colour from the paint range, for their youngest daughter's bedroom. "It is a such a warm, bright fun colour. Perfect for a young girl," she says.
The ensuite bathroom is kept simple in Resene Half Thorndon Cream on the walls, and Resene Eighth Thorndon Cream from the ceiling, trims and door.
Outside, the bagged brick exterior was painted in Resene Titania and the timber cladding was stained in Resene Waterborne Woodsman in Resene Woody Bay from the Resene exterior wood stains range.
The light and dark contrast was designed to separate the house into pods, giving it a more architectural feel and structure.
Copper soakers are a nice addition to the cladding. The stained timber, in Resene Waterborne Woodsman in Resene Woody Bay, is a pleasing addition to the home's natural bush surroundings.
