A bittersweet farewell for a 1920s bungalow

Letting go of a first home is never easy. Every corner and wall holds a milestone, a memory and a meaning. But as life shifted – with mortgage renewals and rising living costs – the decision to sell this much-loved 1920s bungalow became unavoidable for the homeowner.

Before parting however, there was one promise to fulfil: to honour its story with the renovation it had long deserved. Preserving the home’s character became the heart of the project for the design team, Paul and Nicole Wood of Spin Design.

“The façade stays true to its heritage, refreshed with a refined palette that blends timeless and contemporary,” Nicole says. “Weatherboards in Resene Half Silver Chalice deliver a grounded, modern grey, while Resene White trims add a crisp, classic finish to the window frames and architectural details.”

This lovingly restored exterior is painted in Resene Half Silver Chalice, with Resene White on trims and Resene Snapshot on the baseboards, fascia and soffits.

The smoky blue of Resene Snapshot perfectly frames this home and blends beautifully with the weatherboards in Resene Half Silver Chalice. The trims are painted in Resene White.

For contrast, the deep, moody blue of Resene Snapshot accents the baseboards, soffits, fascia and bay window roofs, offering just the right touch of drama. Together, these hues breathe new life into the exterior, striking a balance between old-world charm and modern appeal.

Inside, that same design philosophy continues.

“In the lobby, wainscoting added up to the dado line brings rhythm, warmth and a sense of craftsmanship,” says Nicole. “Above, walls in Resene Tasman offers a calming silvery grey with blue-green undertones, setting a serene tone for the rest of the home. Behind discreet bifold doors, a custom-designed laundry is cleverly tucked into the hallway.”

Entering the home, the soft grey-edged green of Resene Tasman graces the upper walls adding a subtle contrast to the lower panelling and ceiling in Resene Black White.

In the living and dining rooms, period features were lovingly reintroduced. “Added ceiling roses and classic corbels lend graceful detail, while the original light fittings were salvaged and restored, casting a nostalgic glow through the refreshed spaces,” Nicole says. Throughout the home, the walls are painted in Resene Black White, a crisp, grey-edged white that serves as a flawless canvas for furnishings, art and lived-in texture.

In the living room, Resene Black White brightens the space and creates a canvas for personal belongings and artwork.

“The bathrooms are a study in thoughtful balance: both the bathroom and separate toilet were relatively small spaces, so the challenge was to make them feel as spacious and inviting as possible without losing their charm,” says Nicole. Bespoke vanities, premium fittings and a crisp touch of Resene Black White bring a sense of tailored style.

It’s the kitchen that truly steals the show though. It's designed with connection and functionality in mind. It even includes a double oven and wine fridge supporting daily rituals and entertaining. The space flows effortlessly into the dining area with a harmonious palette of Resene Black White which even graces the built-in bench seat inviting long meals, quiet mornings and family conversation.

One of the renovation’s most rewarding outcomes is the newfound indoor-outdoor connection, with both the kitchen and living room opening directly to the deck. The interior and exterior colours, Resene Black White and Resene Half Silver Chalice, blend beautifully with their cool, grey-edged undertones.

Paul and Nicole, bring two distinct styles to the table – Paul’s love of clean, refined minimalism and Nicole’s flair for eclectic, personality-filled spaces. Together, they balance simplicity with soul, creating spaces that are as thoughtful as they are beautiful, which is clear in this home where every detail, from the layout to the restored heritage features, was approached with respect and heart.

With backgrounds in retail and cosmetic design, their journey spans over a decade of crafting tailored interiors that reflect their clients’ lives with precision and creativity. “We’ve grown our business around the belief that good design improves the way we live, and it’s a privilege to help clients reimagine their homes with purpose and heart,” says Nicole.

More than a renovation, this project was a tribute to the past and a gift to the future. Though it was a farewell, it was also a celebration of everything this home was. With soul, charm and quiet elegance, it has passed into new hands, ready to begin its next chapter and hold the stories of another family for years to come.

Top tip: Always test your colours on your home using Resene testpots or Resene A4 drawdown paint swatches. When painting your Resene testpot, paint all of the testpot onto A2 card in two coats leaving an unpainted border around the edge. This helps isolate your new colour from your old colour, so you get a truer appreciation for the colour. Don’t paint your test patches directly onto your home as the existing colour will affect how the new colour looks. Move your swatches around during the day and into the evening to see how they look in different lighting.
