An artistic eye for colour: Setting the stage for an extraordinary home gallery

This elegant, art-filled home was painted almost like a canvas itself – with every Resene colour carefully chosen to complement and elevate the homeowners’ impressive personal collection. Rather than simply hanging art on walls, the homeowners wanted each room to feel like a considered extension of the work it held – immersive, expressive and deeply personal.

“The homeowners wanted to create atmosphere within every room that worked around their personal art collection,” says interior designer Carmel Sloane. “Their home was quite literally becoming an art gallery.”

The entryway is painted in a dark, earthy brown, Resene Oilskin, with contrasting trims in Resene Quarter Spanish White

The living room, adorned in Resene Roadster, provides a bold, vibrant backdrop for the homeowners’ unique and colourful artwork.

Every space in this grand, multi-room home is curated with layers of texture and colour that let the artwork sing. Paintings and sculptures of every scale and style create an immersive experience – almost like walking through a private museum.

Carmel’s approach was led by the collection itself. “The inspiration for the colour scheme came directly from their artwork,” she says. “We worked room by room, selecting Resene hues that would enhance each piece without competing with them.”

To achieve cohesion across the varied palette, she followed one golden rule: keep it flat. “We needed a very soft look throughout, even though we were using so many different colours. We created this softness using ReseneSpaceCote – there couldn’t be any sheen on the walls that might overpower the art.”

This sleek, refined bathroom is a space of tranquillity and relaxation. The walls are painted in Resene Highland, with trims and ceiling in Resene Quarter Spanish White

The master bedroom is painted in the same hue as the bathroom, Resene Highland, offering a grounding space to rest. The trims and ceiling are painted in Resene Quarter Spanish White

Entering this striking home, the entryway greets you in a bold, complex brown, Resene Oilskin. This deep hue grounds the space and works as a backdrop to showcase the most vibrant of artworks. In the lounge, terracotta-toned walls in Resene Roadster envelop the space with warmth, while dramatic drapery and brass details add theatrical flair.

The main bedroom and bathroom walls are adorned in a warm green, Resene Highland, bringing freshness and light, while shades of pink in Resene Foxtrot and Resene Paper Doll shine through in another lounge and bedroom.

The faded rose hue of Resene Foxtrot was used in this lounge, pairing beautifully with the brass and gold frames. The trims and ceiling are in Resene Quarter Spanish White

Coral pink, Resene Paper Doll, was used in this bedroom offering depth behind the vibrant artwork. The trims and ceiling are painted in Resene Quarter Spanish White

Upstairs, a cool, tranquil blue, Resene Wedgewood, transforms the tucked-away lounge into a relaxed retreat. The crispness of white trims in Resene Quarter Spanish White keeps the palette clean and refined.

The cool toned Resene Wedgewood makes this upstairs sitting area a calming space to relax and unwind.

Despite the boldness of each individual colour, this home feels harmonious. The secret? Precision. “Keeping sharp lines throughout was a must, so it took longer to make sure all the cutting-in was perfect,” says Carmel. “Our work became a piece of art itself.”

The result is an interior that not only showcases an extraordinary collectionit becomes part of it.

Top tip:When you’re choosing a palette of bold hues, consider how each room flows into the nextOpen all the doors and place painted swatches of your colours so they are visible through each door so you can see how the colours will play off one anotherThis will help you to know when to continue one colour into two adjoining spaces or whether to go for a contrasting pop of colourIt can be hard to remember the exact hue when you’re shopping, so taking your painted swatches with you will help you keep the accessorising on track and make sure you stay true to the colour drenched style of each room
