Barry brings beauty to the beachside

Stained in striking Resene Pitch Black, with a pop of Resene Lemon Ginger on the front door, this award-winning Christchurch home is a real stand out.

Designed by Barry Connor Design, the new build home is located in a coastal enclave in Waikuku Beach, and is a modern beauty among an eclectic array of baches.

Inside the home, a timeless colour scheme of Resene Double Merino is met with natural timber features, creating warmth and visual texture throughout.

It recently won the Resene Colour in Design Award for Canterbury Westland region of the ADNZ Awards. Barry tells us more about his modern interpretation of a classic beach house.

What was the client’s brief and how do your design and colour choices respond to that?

The layout comprises of two barn style forms – the smaller contains the entry, nook and study space and relates directly to the street. The barns are grounded by a simple box form garage and carport pergola.

The main living area is positioned for all day sun and natural morning light to the master bedroom. It can also be opened up to the wrap-around garden, with an open plan and informal layout.

The light-filled staircase is at the heart of the home. It was created to allow a sense of space to a relatively modest footprint. The light well is accentuated by vertical timber louvres, which provide screening between the main living spaces, reading nook and study.

What was your overall design philosophy?

Strong and simple forms that reference the typical local architecture.

The overall simplicity of the design is a considered response to creating a casual and relaxed style of comfortable coastal living.

What part of the design are you most happy with?

I'm really happy with the overall design layout especially the study nook and window seat area. The vertical slat features create a sense of space within the tiny footprint of the home, and allow the light to fill the home throughout the year.

What was the biggest design challenge for this project?

Keeping a sense of restraint on the style of the design and not getting too complicated with the layout.

Being mindful of the requirement to entertain throughout the year and making the most of the outdoor areas while retaining some sense of privacy and compactness to the plan and spaces.

Is there anyone else (painter, interior designer) you would like mentioned?

Gareth Davis Builders, and Kristen Reid Design for the Kitchen Design.
