NZRealReveals week two: When things don’t go as planned… but you get it done!

09 Oct 2025

The second week of NZRealReveals proved that the weather isn’t always on our side when it comes to home DIY. But despite the challenges that Kelsey and Tai faced, they did a pretty good job at pulling together an incredible outdoor space.

Putting aside a tarpaulin roof, a potential broken toe and unpredictable rain, let’s see how this determined duo did over week two of NZRealReveals:

First things first, prep. Kelsey and Tai washed their deck and balustrade with Resene Moss & Mould Killer 48 hours before staining. This helped to remove any existing mould and moss, which if left untreated could grow through the new stain, discolour itor impair the finish. They now had a healthy surface to begin.

Tai worked his handyman skills and built a pergola to provide shelter for enjoying their patio, and from the wild weather. This of course turned out to be a great option over the tarp!

For the deck, Kelsey and Tai stained this in Resene Woodsman Wood Oil Stain in the shade Resene Jarrah Tree. This is a gorgeous, warm red-brown colour, and they also chose the added benefits of Resene CoolColour technology to reflect more heat in the warmer months, keeping their deck looking better for longer.

Tai also created a custom BBQ space which was finished in Resene Woodsman Penetrating Oil Stain in the shade Resene Bushtrack, an earthy blend of black, brown and green.

The team primed the balustrade in Resene Quick Dry before painting it in Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen CoolColour in Resene Black

We think Kelsey and Tai did an amazing job with their new space, and it will be even more rewarding to enjoy after a few weather bumps along the way.
