DIY lawn games: Make your own dominoes set
duration:

Dynamic dominoes

This colourful version of dominoes is stained in Resene Colorwood Teak with dots painted using Resene Black White (number ones), Resene Daisy Bush (number twos), Resene Riptide (number threes), Resene Princess (number fours), Resene Sunshade (number fives) and Resene Teal Blue (number sixes).

You can play this jumbo version of the classic tile game on a garden lawn or sandy beach. Dominoes is a great way to use up leftover timber offcuts. Keep your tiles together as a set by storing them in an old Resene paint bucket or a crate painted in your favourite Resene colours.

This version is called the double-six set, which relies on 28 tiles in different spot or ‘pip’ combinations.

There are several different ways to play dominoes. The most common is a blocking game, where the player’s goal is to empty their hand while blocking the opponent’s. The person with the highest’ double’ (tile with two matching numbers) starts the game, and the next player must place a matching number at the end of the domino change. You can determine the score by counting the pips in the losing players’ hands once the game ends.

You will need:

Step 1. Cut the pieces to 230mm lengths. For a full set, cut 28 pieces. Sand

the cut sides and carefully wipe away any dust with a cloth.

Step 2. Stain the pieces of wood in Resene Colorwood. Wipe away any excess stain with a rag or cloth.

Step 3. Rule a centre line in the middle of the domino and paint. Once dry, paint the dots in the following combinations

Step 4. Seal the pieces using Resene Aquaclear.
