How to create a chic and elegant space using purple
Let’s face it, purple may not be the first colour that comes to mind when we think about home design, however, it’s all in how you use it. You might be thinking of bright, neon violet or large floral designs, but when used in the right way, you can add a touch of purple to your home that brings a chic, elegant and even timeless feel. Take a look at these designs using Resene paints and wallpapers to see how you can bring this splendid royal tone into your home.
This cocooning and comfy bedroom is painted in Resene Gunsmoke, with floor in Resene Avalanche, dresser in Resene Chapta And Verse, small wall-hung platter and small vase in Resene Couture and large platter in Resene Sumptuous. Floral cushion from Contempa, bedlinen from Indie Home Collective, lamp from Freedom. Project by Claudia Kozub, image by Melanie Jenkins.
Using lilac or mauve as an accent colour, such as on this stout vase and dresser, is a clever way to benefit from purple's soothing properties without overwhelming the room. You’ll also notice that the purple accents bring out the red and purple undertones in the other colours in the room, bringing warmth instead of coldness in a darker space. If you’ve already got a neutral colour in your room, try adding accents of purple in Resene Paua, Resene Grapevine, Resene Upstage and Resene Half Aubergine.
Mauves like Resene Ghost are often overlooked as wall colour options but they have plenty to offer. Thanks to their rich grey-meets-taupe-meets-indigo undertones that shift and change throughout the day and night, these hues are infinitely more interesting than a true neutral. Wall painted in Resene Ghost, battens in Resene Santas Grey and flooring in Resene Colorwood Rock Salt. The DIY cloud artwork is painted in Resene Gumboot, Resene Matakana, Resene Zulu, Resene Jimmy Dean, Resene Santas Grey, Resene Ghost, Resene In The Mauve and Resene Sea Fog with frame in Resene Sea Fog. Bookshelf in Resene Santas Grey (outside and edges) and Resene Jimmy Dean (inside). Chaise lounge from Nood, throw from H&M Home, rug and glass from Freedom. For a serene meditation space, opt for a light mushroom mauve as the main colour, complemented by slightly darker mauve battens on the walls. Resene paints allow for a seamless transition between two shades by using colours from the same card deck, creating a calming and harmonious atmosphere. Try pairing purple shades like Resene Innuendo and Resene Siesta, blue shades like Resene Escapade and Resene Breathless, or greens like Resene Spanish Green and Resene Rainee.
Add a classy touch to your home with Resene Wallpaper Collection 91283.
This room uses a dark purple wallpaper featuring intricate geometric shapes as a feature wall, creating a sophisticated space. The cabinet in a similar shade blends into the wall creating a cohesive space. The warm wooden floor complements the purple hue while also working to ground the space. This combination creates a sense of modern refinement and timeless elegance. The deep purple tones add a touch of drama, while the geometric patterns inject a contemporary flair. Pair this with subtle greys like Resene Triple Concrete and Resene Iron or mushroom taupes like Resene Truffle and Resene Cloud. Paint accessories such as vases and ornaments in a range of purple Resene colours for a tone on tone look.
Paint accessories such as vases and ornaments in a range of purple Resene colours for a tone on tone look. Try delicate violets like Resene Fog and Resene Blue Chalk, or mauves like Resene Marionette and Resene London Hue.
Stripes, depending on how you use them, can change the feel of a room. The vertical stripes in Resene Wallpaper Collection 377102 make this smaller room appear taller and more spacious.
For a more playful yet refined atmosphere, consider a striped Resene wallpaper in varying shades of purple. Choosing a wallpaper or design with a lighter background means your room will stay bright and open and not become overpowered by other shades, like the purple in this design. Add some chic leather furniture and plaid cushions, creating an inviting and stylish living space. Pair this wallpaper with whites like Resene Merino and Resene Double Black White for an effortless look, or use a chic mushroom purple like Resene Lola or Resene High Tea. If you can’t find furniture to match your purple hued wallpaper, pick a colour out of the wallpaper and use it to find a Resene colour that you can paint on your furniture to bring it into the colour palette.
