When homeowners Caitlin and Matthew decided to build their dream family home in Napier’s Te Awa, they didn’t want to blend in with the neighbours, they wanted to build something that truly felt like them. With the help of Architect Sol Atkinson, the couple brought a brief full of ambition: a striking, high-performing four-bedroom home that would balance serious eco-credentials with an unapologetically playful aesthetic created from Resene hues.
“This wasn’t about building a box,” says Sol from Atkinson Harwood Architecture. “Caitlin and Matthew weren’t afraid of selecting bold colour or unexpected finishes; they were excited to explore creative ways to make the home their own.”

The home is now a beacon of performance and personality. From the outside in, it’s clear this is no cookie-cutter build. The home’s monopitch form is framed by natural timber posts and beams stained in Resene Woodsman Whitewash stain, leading to an inviting pink front door painted in Resene Paper Doll, a sweet, cheerful tone that hints at the colour-rich spaces within.

“It’s a relaxed and welcoming space, perfect for family life,” says Sol. Polished concrete floors contribute to the home’s passive solar performance, soaking up warmth from the winter sun that floods in through north-facing glazing.

Resene Merino provides a calm, versatile backdrop throughout bedrooms and bathrooms, with subtle trims in Resene Half Merino for cohesion. The media room offers a moodier retreat, wrapped in Resene Half Inside Back for a cosy, cocooned feel. Meanwhile, outdoor living hasn’t been forgotten with generous eaves and a west-facing overhang extend the living space toward the pool, protected from summer glare and perfect for laid-back entertaining.
Beyond good looks, this home has serious sustainability elements. With high levels of insulation, thermally-broken recessed joinery, and a fresh air and heat recovery system by Stiebel Eltron NZ, plus eco-friendly selections, including FSC-certified timber framing, Tarkett flooring, water-efficient plumbing and of course, Eco Choice-approved Resene paints and stains, tick every green box.
As a reflection of these attributes, the home has achieved a 7 Homestar Built Rating.
