Sian’s Lyttelton villa gets the magic touch
It goes without saying that the kitchen in this renovated villa is exceptionally beautiful. The home is owned and decorated by kitchen and interior designer Sian Gillander, after all.
Overlooking a fabulous view of Lyttelton Harbour, the kitchen’s walls are painted in Resene Eighth Stonehenge, which sets the scene for cabinetry in blue and gold, bringing a sense of grandeur that still ties in with the sea view setting.
Variations of Resene blues continue throughout the home, from delicious Resene Aviator in the lounge and dining room to playful Resene Hippie Blue on the exterior – a welcoming hello to those passing by. Window frames in Resene Oxygen and features in Resene Licorice add to the exterior’s exquisite pop.
While the blues in the villa are on the cooler side, Sian’s brought in warm Resene neutrals to balance out the colour scheme, allowing the blues to shine while still creating a cosy feel.
Sian and husband Herman had to wait on post-earthquake repairs to the home before carrying on the cosmetic work. Since then, Sian has created magic throughout the villa, giving it a timeless feel while still using dramatic, contemporary colours.
She tells us more.
How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors?
I wanted a classic contemporary feel. I prefer eclectic interiors – old mixed with new to create personality.
What part of the house are you most happy with?
All of it, but of course the kitchen.
What advice do you have for someone trying to achieve a similar look?
Never try to create a scheme for what someone else would like – be bold, use colour and incorporate all the things you love. I’m sure someone else will love it too if and when you decide to sell.
What was the biggest challenge for this project?
Not to over capitalise the house and keep within a budget, while also getting the desired overall look and feel.
Do you have a favourite Resene colour?
My new favourite colour is Resene Aviator, used between the lounge and the dining room. It’s dark and bold but doesn’t make the rooms feel dark. Rather the opposite – it brings them alive.
