The artful home of Rachel Rush
When Rachel and Graham set out to build their dream home, they had one goal in mind: to make a vision they both shared a reality. With a love for modern industrial design and an appreciation for colour, especially from the Resene range, they crafted a home that’s as bold as it is beautiful.
Having previously built and renovated homes, Rachel and Graham knew exactly what they wanted. Their “non-negotiables” list included steel, glassand concrete, with every detail meticulously planned. The result? A stunning industrial-style home that combines raw materials with carefully selected Resene hues to soften the look and bring warmth to their minimalist aesthetic.
The living room is painted in Resene Rouge, a magenta toned pink, which pairs beautifully with the lime green couch and Rachel’s striking artwork.
A unique lime green rug lines the hallway, leading the way through a gallery-like space adorned with Rachel’s work. The walls are painted in Resene Half Concrete.
Industrial meets chic throughout Rachel’s home, with bold artwork, exposed beams and walls painted in Resene Half Concrete.
As a full-time artist, Rachel Rush’s appreciation for colour played a huge role in shaping her home’s palette. Starting with a base of Resene Black White on the ceiling and Resene Half Concrete on most of the walls, they embraced contrast in the bathrooms and lounge areas. Resene Ballerina adds a soft pink glow to their downstairs bathroom and Rachel’s upstairs studio, while Resene Rouge brings rich warmth to the ensuite and lounge.
Their love for depth and drama is evident in the generous use of Resene Double Cod Grey, a favourite of Rachel’s. “While I always think everything looks better in black, Resene Double Cod Grey has this beautifully soft dark tint that pairs so well with other colours,” she says.
Resene Rouge also graces the master ensuite, offering warmth and charm against the organic and raw textures.
In the stairwell, Resene Double Cod Grey provides a chic and cocooning feel lit up by elegant lighting and unique artwork.
The bedroom is cosy and charming with an industrial edge featuring a brick wall, sliding door in Resene Double Cod Grey and walls in Resene Half Concrete.
The real wildcard in the design is a vibrant lime green carpet. Inspired by a childhood memory of her Auntie’s home, Rachel tracked down a sample from the original renovation and matched it perfectly. The bold choice ties into their nature-inspired concept, reflecting the hues of a fruit tree in spring – dark branches, soft blossomsand bright green leaves. “What could go wrong?” she says.
The heart of the home is the main lounge, where the family – Rachel, Graham and their children Piper, Hunter and Honor – gathers. Open-plan and spacious, it connects seamlessly to the kitchen and dining area while offering stunning city views. “If you squint just right, you can pretend you’re looking over Central Park or the Sydney Harbour Bridge!” Rachel says.
The earthy, organic hues make the dining and living space inviting. Rachel’s large artwork offers a burst of colour adding an edgy touch. The ceiling is painted in Resene Black White creating a contrast to the exposed beams.
The kitchen takes on a similar industrial style and nature inspired palette with dark exposed beams, stainless-steel shelving and earthy toned brick panels from Muros. The ceiling is painted in Resene Black White.
Designing the kitchen was one of their biggest challenges. Wanting to stay true to their industrial theme, they couldn’t find an off-the-shelf solution that worked. Instead, they incorporated Muros brick panels, wide stainless-steel shelves, and cleverly designed black raw steel pocket doors to give them the flexibility of having an open or concealed kitchen space.
The pastel hue of Resene Ballerina softens the darker palette in this bathroom.

The entire project came with its share of hurdles, from designing around a sloping site to ensuring pedestrian-level access. But through it all, Rachel and Graham stuck to their motto: “If it was easy, everyone would be doing it.” Trusting their instincts and being bold paid off, and they couldn’t be happier with the end result.
With striking architecture, a curated colour palette and personal touches that make it uniquely theirs, Rachel’s home is a true testament to creativity and vision. Thanks to a stunning selection of paint colours and quality finishes, they’ve achieved the perfect balance of industrial edge and inviting warmth – an artful home in every sense of the word.
