The perfect paint colours for a timeless farmhouse
Welcome to this home that blends rustic character with contemporary elegance. Featuring rich Resene Double Stonewall painted panels and crisp surrounding walls in Resene Quarter Wan White, this design showcases how a considered colour pairing can bring warmth, light and timeless style.
Set among the rolling pastures of a farm in beautiful Omanawa in the Bay of Plenty, this modern farmhouse is a harmony of rural charm and contemporary design.
Designed by Jason MacDonald of JMAC Architecture, the house draws inspiration directly from its surroundings. Its folding roofline gently dips and rises, echoing the majestic Kaimai Mamaku ranges in the distance. It’s a breathtaking nod to the environment and a subtle reminder of the rhythm of life on the land.
From the outset the homeowners had one very clear request: they wanted to bring the “outdoors in.” This vision guided every design decision - expansive glazed sliders open up and connect the inside spaces with the fresh countryside air and Yellowfox interior designer Sophia Cole took inspiration from the land and wove it through the interior design.
The panels feature on the kitchen island and Resene Double Stonewall paint was selected due it its perfect pairing with the splashback tiles. Resene Quarter Wan White provides a lighter contrast to the darker kitchen finishes.
A sunken seating area features vertical wall panels painted in Resene Double Stonewall complemented by crisp white walls in Resene Quarter Wan White.
Sophia chose a palette inspired by the mossy greens and earthy browns of the nearby pastures, as well as designing all of the bespoke cabinetry in the home. At the heart of her design is Resene Double Stonewall paint perfectly colour-matched to the Lume Musk tiles from Tile Warehouse. Resene Double Stonewall’s gorgeous, muted green was applied over Batten 25 Adorno vertical panelling, creating stunning feature walls that feature through the home. The effect is subtle yet striking, bringing the tones of the outdoors inside while establishing a soothing sense of balance and harmony.
The Batten 25 Adorno panelling painted in Resene Double Stonewall gives this utility space a sense of height and works well with the wood finish and black hardware. Ceilings painted in Resene SpaceCote Flat in Resene Alabaster.
Internal doors are painted in Resene Lustacryl Semi Gloss Enamel in Resene Half Wan White.
To complement the green hues Sophia selected Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen in Resene Quarter Wan White as the main backdrop colour and Resene Lustacryl Semi Gloss Enamel in Resene Half Wan White on the internal doors. Its crisp, clean tone highlights the home’s other design features beautifully and contrast well against darker accents like the matte black window joinery, bold kitchen cabinetry and sleek black benchtops. The result is a modern farmhouse interior that feels fresh, light and full of depth.
The open-plan kitchen and dining area is the hub of the home, perfect for family meals or gathering with friends after a day on the farm. A spacious living room complete with a cosy fireplace invites everyone to slow down and soak up the warmth of the space.
With stunning views that surround this home, using Resene Quarter Wan White on the interior walls allows for the scenery to take centre stage.
Sophia’s attention to detail is evident in her thoughtful selection of materials and finishes. Resene Double Stonewall was specifically chosen not only for its visual beauty but also for its ability to complement the home’s other natural elements, such as the smoky timber cabinetry and polished concrete floors.
The Omanawa Farmhouse is light-filled, open and connected to the land, yet refined and contemporary.

Top tip: When it comes to creating a flawless interior finish, your paint base matters just as much as your colour choice. Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen is a designer favourite for good reason. This premium waterborne paint has a soft, low-sheen finish that’s perfect for walls where you want a smooth, elegant look without too much shine. It is an acrylic enamel so will also dry harder so marks are more easily removed than from standard wall paints. If you’re unsure what finish to use, head to your nearest Resene ColorShop or Ask a Resene Paint Expert online for free.
