Top animal theme designs for kids' rooms

Each year on the first Sunday of March we celebrate Children’s Day. This special day honours the curiosity, joy and potential of our next generation, and what better way to celebrate this day than bringing you some design inspiration for their very own spaces at home.

The best kind of kids’ room designs contain a mix of colour, practicality and joyful décor that encourages them to play and learn. Animals make a huge appearance in young children’s lives and spaces, often becoming some of their favourite things to talk about and play with.

Below, we have some great animal-themed ideas to get you started, which we know both you and your little ones will love!

The calm and contemporary hue of Resene Oxygen on these walls creates a space that’s restful, while the striped wall in Pursuit and Half Gin Fizz adds a playful and engaging touch, perfect for children’s spaces. The floor, painted in Resene Walk-on in Half Gin Fizz keeps things bright and open with some added storage for practicality and fun animal toys and décor. Art from endemicworld; bedside table and bed from Mocka; linen from Foxtrot Home, lion and mouse from Allium. Project by Amber Armitage, image by Wendy Fenwick.

Great for all ages, Resene FX Blackboard and Chalkboard Paint (right wall) allows children to express their creativity, without permanently marking walls! The animal mural is painted in Resene Black, Pohutukawa, Paddock, Quarter Coriander, Butterfly Bush, Twister, Half Sea Fog, My Sin, Broom, Dell, Limeade, Rock N Roll, Glamour Puss and Woodstock. The cot, chairs and floor are in Half Sea Fog; table and stool in Moonbeam. Soft toys from Bob & Friends. Project by Tracey Strange, mural by Hannah Tapner, image by Belinda Merrie.

Try using animal prints as inspiration, such as this zebra pattern wall, painted in Resene Sauvignon and Sakura. The floor is in French Grey, cabinet doors in Sakura and Golden Tainoi, wall hooks in Golden Tainoi. Back-pack from Crywolf; bird, caravan suitcase, wooden camera, bucket and hat from Little Whimsy. Dinosaurs are always a popular choice for children. The walls and floor in this roaring dino room are painted in Resene Half Barely There with Resene Jack N’ Rose 2 Wallpaper Collection LL10021 featuring on the headboard, shelf and light. The bookshelf and headboard frame are painted in Smokescreen; bedside table in Quarter Perfect Taupe and lamp In Spindle. Duvet and ball cushion from Adairs; throw and cushion from Freedom. You could paint a mural on your children’s wall in your chosen Resene testpot colours, or you could opt for a wallpaper strip like this one with cute stacked bears. Pair Resene Little Love Wallpaper Collection 38136-2 with other bear-themed accessories such as a duvet, wall art and teddies.

The muted colours and whimsical animals in Resene Brand McKenzie Wallpaper Collection BMCF00304B make it a great choice for neutral lovers who still want their children’s rooms to have a touch of joy. Plus, this design pairs great with your favourite shades in the Resene Whites & Neutrals range like Resene Truffle, Double Thorndon Cream and Quarter Joss.

Top tips and tricks for kids’ rooms:

  • The best choice for paints are those that are durable, low-odour and washable to handle high wear and tear. Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen is ideal for walls, while Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss is perfect for trims, both being easy to clean. If allergies are of concern Resene Zylone Sheen VOC Free is recommended by the Sensitive Choice New Zealand.
  • Always try out your colour scheme first with Resene testpots. Any leftovers can be used for fun art projects such as letting the kids create their own artwork for their room!
  • Create an immersive and fun space with Resene FX Nightlight glow-in-the-dark paint. It works best over a Resene White painted base and is perfect for creating a ceiling full of shining stars.
  • Resene FX Pearl Shimmer is a waterborne pearlescent glaze that creates beautiful shimmer effects, particularly over dark colours. Try it over pale pink for a soft shimmery fairy or unicorn effect.
  • Create a magnetic wall using Resene FX Magnetic Magic under your topcoats. Then stick magnets onto small pictures and characters so your child can adjust their room scene.
  • Create a wall to be written on with Resene FX Blackboard and Chalkboard Paints.
  • Check out the Resene KidzColour chartor the Resene website for more bold, bright paint colours.
