Warm neutrals and blush hues bring this Oratia home to life

Resene Truffle and Resene Shabby Chic takes centre stage in this gorgeous Oratia abode. It’s a modern home designed to reflect the beauty of its lush surroundings. Stepping away from white and embracing just the right touch of colour.

Interior designer Jamie Durrant says the project became one of her proudest achievements, blending warmth, luxury and comfort through a refined, earthy palette.

“Project Oratia is a highlight of my career,” says Jamie. “It started out as a few meetings to run through colour options, but quickly evolved into five weeks of design sessions where my client began to hand over more and more decisions. Each time, her trust grew, which gave me the freedom to stretch my design skills and create something really special.”

From the outset, the brief was clear. No stark whites. The homeowner wanted her home to embrace colour, with neutrals that would ‘enhance’ rather than compete with the natural backdrop of the surrounding area.

Resene Truffle on cabinetry is a gentle, earthy neutral.

“I love working with Resene Quarter Truffle and I knew it would work really well here,” Jamie says. “It provides the right amount of colour on the walls without pulling focus from the outdoor landscape. It’s such a beautiful tone that pairs perfectly with warm accents, without feeling too safe.”

The main walls are in Resene Zylone Sheen in Resene Quarter Truffle, and to bring depth and variation, Jamie used Resene Half Truffle on the rumpus walls and cabinetry, creating a subtle shift in tone that gives the space a cocooning, media-room feel. In slight contrast, the kitchen cabinetry features Resene Truffle, a deeper version of the same hue that subtly adds the kitchen into its own zone within the open-plan space.

Both the kitchen and rumpus cabinetry were finished in Resene AquaLAQ  Soft Touch Satin, developed to not only feel luxurious but to resist finger marks left on the surface of push to open joinery.

Resene Truffle draws out the darker details in the beautiful Marble Yamuna benchtop by Archant,” says Jamie. “And using that same Resene AquaLAQ finish means it feels high-end but still family-friendly.”

The home’s layered neutrals extend through to the ceilings and trims, painted in Resene Quarter Rice Cake and Resene Half Rice Cake, which provides just enough warmth to complement the Resene Truffle tones.

And for a romantic twist, Jamie introduced colour in the master bedroom with two feature walls in Resene Shabby Chic, a gentle blush that feels both playful and refined.

“When my client told me she loved pink, I immediately thought of Resene Shabby Chic,” Jamie says. “It’s elegant and balanced, with nude undertones that stop it feeling ‘too pink’. Paired with blush linen sheers, it created a soft, luxurious atmosphere.”

The ensuite adjoining the master bedroom features deep green tiles, so Jamie balanced the look by painting the other two-bedroom walls in Resene Quarter Truffle for a seamless flow between the restful pinks and the rich, moody tones beyond.

“I wanted the view from the bed into the ensuite to feel harmonious, not jarring. The colours work beautifully together.”

Throughout the design process, the homeowner’s trust in Jamie’s expertise made all the difference. “She built a home before and knew how overwhelming all the selections can be. Once she realised how much easier it was to have a designer guide her, she handed over most of the decisions. It meant everything worked together cohesively from the start.”

The project recently earned Jamie a TRENDS Highly Commended Design Award for the kitchen, and she says it’s a career highlight that perfectly sums up her design philosophy. Confident, considered and quietly expressive.

“This home is proof that a neutral palette doesn’t have to be boring,” she says. “When you use tones like Resene Truffle and Resene Shabby Chic thoughtfully, you create spaces that feel timeless, warm and deeply personal.”
