1 dining space, 3 ways
In each issue of habitat magazine, we ask designers to give a new look to a room in a house we have featured. In the latest issue, we visited a Wellington home that magnificently merged architectural beauty with stunning colour – see it here.
We then asked interior designers Rachel Tabb and Anita Thomas to each come up with their own interpretation of the open-plan dining and kitchen areas. Here are the results.
The original
This is the kitchen and dining space as created by architect Gerald Parsonson and the homeowners, who regarded colour and architectural design as equally important.
Their palette of playful, unique and interesting colour began in the kitchen where they chose Resene Trinidad (orange) for the lower cabinets, Resene Kumutoto (aqua) for the wall cabinets Resene and Banana Split for the end wall. The other walls are in Resene Bianca with the polished concrete floor and plywood ceiling providing natural elements.
Rachel’s look
Designer Rachel Tabb of Bubble Interiors created a dramatic monochromatic scheme, warmed with natural accents.
Walls in Resene Grey Friars and a ceiling in Resene Quarter Alabaster are a calm complement to the greenery beyond the windows. To offset the cool colours, she introduced a timber table, copper accessories, a striped hemp floor rug and a whimsical feature pendant.
Top tip: Protect concrete floors and benchtops from wear and tear with Resene Concrete Wax.
Anita’s look
Interior designer Anita Thomas chose dusky pink walls in Resene Renaissance and Resene Soulmate as a fashion treatment for this area and to add an intimate feel.
The dark-stained ceiling in Resene Colorwood Crowshead and ash parquet floor frame the area and enhance the feeling of enclosure, while the low-hung trio of lights help define the dining zone. Neutral kitchen cabinets in Resene Half Sea Fog and black benchtop allow the walls to be the feature and keep the space from feeling too feminine, as do the strong architectural lines of the table and chairs. Resene Dusted Blue garden walls have a similar tonal base and quality to the pinks used inside, it also means that the courtyard retains a discrete feel.
Top tip: If you love pastel colours but fear they’ll look too lolly-like, choose a duskier version of the colour instead, and team it with crisp white or black accents.

This home’s palette of playful, unique and interesting colour began in the kitchen where the owners and architect chose Resene Trinidad (orange) for the lower cabinets, Resene Kumutoto (aqua) for the wall cabinets and Resene Banana Split for the end wall.

A striking look is created by Rachel Tabb with walls and kitchen cabinetry painted in Resene Grey Friars, the plywood ceiling painted in Resene Quarter Alabaster, and accents of pale timber on the benchtop and furniture.

Products used in Rachel’s scheme include a Splay Table, Timothy John High Sidekick Barstools, Tall Brass Geo Vase and Mercury Linen Cushion all from Paper Plane; Portobello Chairs from Ico Traders; an Armadillo & Co Nest Weave Awning Stripe Rug from The Ivy House; and a Heracleum 11 Small Pendant Light by Moooi from ECC Lighting.

A very on-trend look is chosen by Anita Thomas, using dusky pinks (Resene Renaissance and Resene Soulmate), a ceiling in Resene Colorwood Crowshead, kitchen cabinets in Resene Half Sea Fog, and garden walls in Resene Dusted Blue.

Products featured in Anita’s scheme include a parquet floor finished in Resene Aquaclear by James Henry; a Campa Dining Table and Chairs from Hunter Furniture; Moss Bunnies from Freedom Furniture; Kaleidoscope Cushions from Me And My Trend; window seat fabrics Trove and Baja from Textilia; and Hank Pendant Lights from Eden Light.
