A heartfelt design for a lucky winner: Take a tour of the fully furnished home up for grabs in the Heart Foundation Lottery

When the chance of turning a new house into a home is presented to an interior designer, there is a desire to bring style and design. For Trace Beaumont Orr of Décor Design, having the opportunity to collaborate on a Heart Foundation Lottery first prize home meant providing a modern and contemporary touch to a new build that is set to become a very special residence.

The three-bedroom, fully-furnished Jennian home in Taupō is up for grabs in the charity's popular lottery. The home is painted in Resene is within walking distance to the lakefront and only a short drive from the shops and the airport. The total prize value is worth $750,000.

Liz Halpin, Lottery Operations Manager at the Heart Foundation, worked collaboratively on this build with Trace, a local interior designer in Taupō, to create a warm and welcoming home that would be attractive to a wide range of ages. Trace and Liz share their design ideas for this exciting project.

What was your design brief?

Taupō is a popular location for tourists and combines the spectacular setting of hot springs with calming waters. We wanted to reflect this dramatic and yet restful atmosphere within the walls of this beautiful new house.

What colours did you choose?

The exterior colour palette was chosen to blend with the surrounding environment. We chose Resene Tapa for the oblique vertical cladding and the subtle contrast of Resene Eighth Tapa for the linear horizontal cladding with COLORSTEEL Grey Friars for the roof, joinery, front door, and garage door.

Inside, Resene Half White Pointer was chosen for the ceilings, window frames, doors and door frames. This provides the right base to create a Hamptons style home using navy blue and off-white furniture and furnishings as the predominant colour.

What was the biggest challenge for this project?

We wanted to maintain a chic look that also had the feeling of a moving and comfortable space. Texture was introduced using items such as rugs, rattan wall décor, wooden furniture, cane bedroom items, furnishing fabrics, bed linen, green foliage, and wooden blinds throughout. This helps to provide a fresh and contemporary style against the navy theme.

What was your favourite aspect of the design?

We loved using the navy-blue chairs to provide a point of difference and the rattan is a great accessory to the navy theme. For me, this really gives the feel of a lakeside abode that can be both relaxing and adventurous at the same time.

This property is the most recent Heart Foundation Lottery first prize home, built by major sponsor, Jennian Homes. The long-standing Lottery offers a new, fully furnished Jennian home six times each year, located in retirement and holiday destinations throughout New Zealand. Resene Half White Pointer was used throughout the living areas in contrast with the navy-blue furnishings to recreate a look of the Hamptons.

Rattan wall décor and furnishings were used as a buffer to the ocean feel in various parts of the house. The walls, trim and ceiling were painted in a crisp Resene Half White Pointer.

To meet the brief of a calming beach atmosphere, bright colours were used with rustic wooden furniture. The walls and ceiling are Resene Half White Pointer.

The bedrooms were given a touch of playfulness that reflects the adventurous nature of Taupō and the surrounding areas. The bedrooms were painted in Resene Half White Pointer.

Cane lamps provided a warm touch to the master bedroom that imitates the hot springs that have made Lake Taupō famous with tourists.

The exterior follows the same colour theme of navy-blue, off-white and grey, all mixed in with a touch of cane. The walls are Resene Tapa and Resene Eighth Tapa.

Resene Tapa was used to replicate the volcanic landscape of Taupō teamed with COLORSTEEL Grey Friars on the roof, joinery, front door, and garage door.
