A new build that’s both chic and family-friendly with Resene Black White and Resene Wafer and a cute-as a-button play kitchen for the kids

When Jessica and Nick Robinson built their home in Rolleston, near Christchurch they made sure every detail was just how they dreamed it will be. This included designing two kitchens: One painted in crisp Resene Black White where they cook their meals and another play kitchen in the playroom for their kids, Edie and Milo with a toy coffee machine painted in Resene Dark Buff, a toy toaster painted in Resene Cashmere and a toy electric kettle painted in Resene Duck Egg Blue.

“My favourite room would be a tie between Edie’s bedroom and the playroom,” says Jessica.

“The playroom is very cute. Milo loves putting the dishes in the sink and turning the stove on and off and my daughter makes me a pretend coffee.”

“The playroom has all white walls with rainbows and some pops of colour added through artwork and toys which I find pleasing to the eye, without compromising on fun, which is so important in a playroom.”

Having a builder in the family meant the decision to build a modern new family home was an obvious one for Jessica and Nick.

“My dad owns his own building company - Scott Harvey Builders - so it made the most sense for us to build and to have him do it,” Jessica says. “It also meant that we got to design the layout ourselves and pick all the details which I loved doing.”

The pandemic also played its part in the family’s journey to get into their new house, with lockdowns causing delays to the consent.

“We were lucky though. Having my dad as the builder meant he worked very efficiently for us and the house was finished in five months from the start of the build,” she says.

The end result is a sophisticated, stylish four-bedroom house that is home to the couple and their two children. When it came to decorating the interior of the house the couple had clear ideas of what they wanted, and with Nick working as a trade sales rep for Resene, there was a clear choice when it came to what paint company colours to use.

The majority of the home’s interior walls are painted in Resene Black White in a low sheen finish. The result is spaces that feel light, airy and spacious. In different rooms earthy-toned and pastel contrasts in both painted features and furniture add plenty of eye-catching interest, while retaining a calm, soothing vibe. The front door, painted in Resene Grey Friars, also adds a note of bold drama against the rest of the monochrome colour scheme.

“We wanted the house to be modern and bright so we chose Resene Black White as it can be warmed up or cooled down depending what you put with it,” Jessica says.

Jessica and Nick have kept the minimalist theme running through the house, with ceiling, doors and trim throughout painted in  Resene Half Black White for a subtle note of difference.

They’ve also used different finishes through the house so the light hits the surfaces differently and gives a discreet but effective change in appearance. The walls in the bedrooms and living area are in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen for a modern, low sheen look with the durability of enamel. In the two bathrooms and kitchen, the Resene Black White walls are in Resene SpaceCote Loe Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom, a durable waterborne enamel with added anti-bacterial silver protection and MoulDefender making it ideal for wet areas.

Throughout the home the doors and trim are in Resene Lustacryl for a semi-gloss finish that’s durable and easy to wipe down.

Contrast colours in the living areas, and the master bedroom are all quite similar in keeping to a minimalist palette of wood finishes and earthy tans or burnt oranges with the luxurious leather couch and soft furnishings like bedlinen.

However, in the two children’s bedrooms, Jessica has extended her colour palette to allow for a little whimsy. In five-year-old Edie’s bedroom the lower half of the walls are painted in the warm dusky pink of Resene Wafer, which is Jessica’s favourite colour used in the house. It is complemented by pale bare wood features and other delicate, nature-inspired design features like florals and rainbows.

In two-year-old Milo’s room the lower half of the walls are the warm blue-grey of Resene Half Inside Back.

The fourth bedroom is also a children’s zone having been designated as a playroom, filled with plenty of kid-friendly design features, that keep with the warm, muted minimalist colour palette. Muted rainbows with plenty of toys and furniture in blonde wood with earthy tones of pink, cream, white and pale tan create a dreamy, creative space for the kids.

“In the kids’ rooms I wanted to add a bit of fun and personality so we went with their favourite colours in their rooms, and we went with half feature walls for something a bit different to your traditional one full colour feature wall,” Jessica says.

“I love how Edie’s room is monochromatic with the pink and white on the walls that is reflected in the decor and styling with a theme of florals added in.

Outside the kids’ rooms Jessica is particularly pleased with the overall layout and flow of the house. “It is a very open plan, from the entry to the back of the house where our living spaces are. It’s great for the kids to move around as they please.” Another favourite feature is the pitched ceiling and skylight near the front entry.

While there are small details to functional areas in the kitchen and laundry the couple would add or change if they built again, Jessica says the family is thrilled with the finished result. “We are very happy with the house and love all the colours and paints we used.”

Top tip: Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen is a waterborne enamel paint with an on-trend low sheen finish, ideal for interior walls in living spaces and bedrooms through to wet areas like kitchens, bathrooms and laundries. It’s also available in a Resene SpaceCote Kitchen & Bathroom version with anti-bacterial silver and MoulDefender for extra protection.

The walls of the playroom are in Resene Black White with rainbows which match the toy coffee machine painted in Resene Dark Buff, the toy toaster painted in Resene Cashmere and the toy electric kettle painted in Resene Duck Egg Blue.

In Milo’s bedroom the half-feature wall is in comforting Resene Half Inside Back which wraps around the cot, and the top half of the room is Resene Black White and the ceiling is Resene Half Black White. Whimsical design features and a pop of burnt orange keep the minimalist palette fun and child-like.

With the same matte and minimalist Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen tinted to Resene Black White walls throughout the house, bold contrast comes from wood finishes and soft furnishings. Jessica and Nick used Resene Ceiling Paint tinted to Resene Half Black White on the ceiling.

The pretty Resene Wafer pink half feature wall in Edie’s bedroom is complemented by the Resene Black White on the top half of the feature wall, Resene Half Black White on the ceiling and muted neutral features and floral touches.

The front entry is given a note of drama with the front door painted in Resene Grey Friars, emphasising the light airy feel that comes from the Resene Black White walls and the Resene Half Black White ceiling.

Wood finishes are dotted throughout the house for a clean contrast with the monochrome colour scheme. The skylight is one of Jessica’s favourite features in the finished home.

In the living area the warm caramel of the leather couch makes for an eye-catching contrast with the Resene Black White walls and Resene Half Black White ceilings. The kitchen area features Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen Kitchen & Bathroom tinted to Resene Black White.

The walls of the dining room are in clean, crisp Resene Black White which complements the Scandi-style furniture.

The colour scheme of the children’s playroom keeps with the minimalist design theme of the whole home, while still being fun and whimsical.
