A symphony of shades: A home transformed by colours, textures and creativity

In early 2018, Logan and Kelly alongside Logan's parent's embarked on a project that transformed their West Auckland section into a vibrant, colourful haven. With the help of interior designer Andrea Burney from Yellowfox and a range of Resene paints and wallpapers, this home now defies the trend of monotone white and reflects the owners’ love for colour and individuality.

The goal was to build two houses, one for Logan's parent's and one for Logan and Kelly. Both houses have their own individuality and sit alongside each other and complement the exiting house on the section. All three houses utilise Resene exterior paint. The subdivision began, with the builds commencing later that year. Despite facing delays, including a pause during the Covid-19 lockdown, the project persevered, and by September 2020, both houses were complete.

The first guest bedroom is immersed in Resene Rivergum, a gorgeous, calming green painted on the walls. Ceiling in Resene Alabaster.

The unique and colourful design even caught the attention of the House of the Year Awards, earning the project a well-deserved Bronze.

The second guest bedroom is painted in Resene Helix, a complementary stony green, creating a harmonious flow between the adjacent rooms. Ceiling in Resene Alabaster.

The inspiration for the colour scheme was a departure from the prevailing trend of all-white interiors. Logan and Kelly, both lovers of vibrant hues, envisioned a home that told a different story in each room. Filled with various textures, including leather, velvet, concrete, plants and animals, their home exudes warmth, inviting guests into a space that is both calming and energising.

The kitchen, dining and living area is painted in Resene Triple White Pointer, a mid-toned brew of grey beige, providing a balance to the other lively shades throughout the home. Ceiling in Resene Alabaster.

The study, where Kelly works from home, embraces the feminine and calming Resene Shabby Chic painted on the walls.

The selection of Resene paints and wallpapers played a crucial role in bringing their vision to life. Resene Triple White Pointer adorns common areas, providing a lighter hue to balance the vibrancy of other rooms, which feature soothing greens, peachy taupes and dramatic inky blacks. Resene Alabaster was the sole white in the house, used on the ceiling and trims.

The master bedroom features inky blue-black Resene Indian Ink on all walls, creating a cosy and cocooning sanctuary.

Two distinct Resene wallpaper designs add further character to the home. An earthy toned geometric meets nature design covers the entry wall right around to the guest bathroom, creating a three-sided feature wall. The other black and metallic design transformed the entire WC into a captivating, luxurious space. Furniture and curtains throughout the home were carefully chosen to complement these wallpapers, creating a cohesive design.

The entrance is adorned with Resene Wallpaper Collection 69808, a stunning feature that welcomes guests. Walls are painted in Resene Triple White Pointer, ceiling in Resene Alabaster and trims in Resene Nero.

The powder room is embraced with the luxurious design, Resene Wallpaper Collection 309331, with Resene Nero on accent doors and skirting to provide a subtle contrast.

Despite facing challenges during the build, including the disruption caused by the pandemic, the project was completed successfully. Ben Cashmore's dedication and Andrea Burney's expert advice played pivotal roles in the project's success. Kelly recommends working with an interior designer when building or renovating, highlighting the invaluable guidance and encouragement received throughout the process.

The exterior is painted in Resene Friar Greystone with soffits in Resene Half Friar Greystone and trims in Resene Nero.

Vertical weatherboards and trims are painted in the striking black, Resene Nero, with horizontal weatherboards in Resene Friar Greystone and front door in Resene Scoria.

“I enjoyed working with clients who were not afraid of colour or pattern, enabling personality to be brought into the spaces to reflect the owners’ unique style,” Andrea says.

This unique, colourful, and well-designed home stands as a testament to the power of collaboration and the courage to embrace individuality in every stroke of colour and texture.

Top tip: Just like you would test a paint with a Resene testpot, you should also test a wallpaper. Order a sample through your Resene ColorShop, take it home and pin it to the wall. View it during the day and after dark to see how the lighting changes the way it looks. To calculate how much wallpaper you need, measure from floor to ceiling and the length of each wall and make a note of the size of any doors and windows you’re papering around. The amount of wallpaper in a roll can vary, so take your measurements to your local Resene ColorShop and the staff will be able to calculate how many rolls you need. You may need to allow extra if you’re working with a patterned wallpaper so you’re able to match the pattern at the seams.
