After a long search Anna settled on Resene Seaweed for the kitchen, an olive green that brings a calm feel to the busy space, teamed with Resene Alabaster on the ceiling and trims.
Anna combined with crisp whites on the cabinetry and countertops with the calming Resene Seaweed on the walls and clean trims and ceilings in Resene Alabaster to keep the busy kitchen feeling fresh.
Two topcoats in Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen over basecoats in Resene FX Magnetic Magic means this wall in Anna’s kitchen can be used as an interactive noticeboard that doubles as an art station for the kids. Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen works just like a chalkboard, which can be wiped clean with a damp cloth whenever you want a blank slate while Resene FX Magnetic Magic is capable of holding strong magnets. Walls in Resene Seaweed, skirting boards, ceiling and trims in Resene Alabaster.
For the laundry, Anna chose another atmospheric colour. Resene Coast is a deep rich blue that pairs beautifully with earthy tones. With warm lighting it makes a moody backdrop for the warm wooden shelves that display Anna’s jewel toned preserves and natural treasures. Architraves in Resene Alabaster.
Anna chose Resene Albescent White for the ceiling, trims and walls in her bedroom oasis. The deep indigo velvet headboard harmonises well with the rich floral design of Resene Wallpaper Collection E358000.
Anna’s daughter picked out Resene Wallpaper Collection 219280 to feature in her bedroom and they made a smart choice in Resene Blanched Pink on the remaining walls. The soft, dusty and feminine shade not only creates a soothing feeling in the room – it makes the space feel bigger and brighter too. Architraves and skirting boards in Resene Alabaster.
A wall of Resene Chapta And Verse (left) – a lovely, deep aubergine colour – balances the delicate sweetness of Resene Mesmerise (right), a misty rose shade. The exterior of Anna’s family home was given a facelift with a fresh coat of Resene Half Arrowtown. Staining the fascia in Resene Woodsman Bark, a deep yet warm brown wood stain, adds subtle contrast and detail that connects with the timber front door.
An atmospheric paint palette gives this hardworking Hamilton house a feel-good refresh
Anna loves her house. She’s made a lifetime of happy family memories in the Hamilton home she’s shared with husband Grieg and their children for the past eight years. In fact, she reckons it is the ‘best house ever’. But after almost a decade of family life, wear and tear was showing throughout her beloved home. She knew the right thing to do was show it some TLC. With some careful planning, lots of fun with Resene testpots and some valued advice from a trusted expert, Anna transformed her adored but dated home into a refreshed haven, ready to take on anything the next decade of modern family life throws at it.
Keen to make her mark on a high use area of the house, Anna set out to tackle the kitchen first. She had plenty of ideas and had a great time trying out lots of different Resene paint colours but couldn’t quite pin down ‘the one’ that fully captured the mood she was after. For an expert opinion, Anna brought in Cambridge-based interior designer Wayne Good of Arkanda Interiors. Together, the pair narrowed down a shortlist of hues that fit the bill, and soon afterward, Anna settled on Resene Seaweed – a bitter olive brown that she is thrilled with. “The colour just finishes the room off and gives the exact feel I was after; modern, but still in keeping with the style of the house,” she says.
Because Resene Seaweed is a darker toned green, Anna went for ceilings, open shelves, cabinetry and countertops in fresh whites, including painted areas in Resene Alabaster, to keep the space from looking closed in.
The heart of the family home, the kitchen is a hardworking space and Anna needed her paint finishes to be able to keep up, too. For that reason, she chose Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen for her topcoats and basecoated one of the walls in Resene FX Magnetic Magic. This means that the wall can now be used as a notice board to plan the week, post school notices and it doubles as somewhere the kids can let their creativity shine with chalk creations. It’s a real lifesaver for the busy family, one that can be easily wiped clean with a damp cloth when they’re ready for a fresh start.
Next on the to-do list was the laundry, where Anna chose the deep atmospheric tone of Resene Coast. The striking blue has really transformed the functional utility area and provides a sharp background for wooden shelves that store Anna’s homemade preserves. Contrary to what many believe about dark wall colours, Anna says the moody blue hue has been really cheering to spend time around. “I now enjoy doing laundry!”
Buoyed by two successful experiments with colour, Anna carried her renovating into the master bedroom with Resene Albescent White on the ceiling paired with walls in Resene Wallpaper Collection E358000, a velvety floral design. The warm, linen-like beige is a great choice for a bedroom that’s full of texture. Anna says the pairing makes her smile every time she walks into the room.
Resene Mesmerise and Resene Chapta And Verse combine for a charming play on a pink and purple theme in Anna’s 6-year-old daughter’s room. The other kids are chuffed with their bedrooms, too, and had a blast giving their input into the colour choices. In one room, Resene Unwind, a gentle and relaxing lichen green, balances out the more pigmented ceramic blue green of Resene Ming. In another, soft Resene Blanched Pink plays off the tones in the design of Resene Wallpaper Collection 219280 to make the room feel soothing and twice as big – which is a big win.
It’s not just the inside of Anna’s home that received a makeover either. The outside was treated to a whole new look with cladding painted in Resene Half Arrowtown while the timber fascia was stained in Resene Woodsman Bark, a deep brown wood stain that brings warmth, contrast and colour while still allowing the natural grain to show through. A fresh coat of deep Resene Ironsand on the garage doors was the finishing touch on the much-loved family home, which is now looking its best.
