Anna and Andrew bring beach style to the big city
When it came to renovating their 1940s home, Anna and Andrew were drawn to a beach-house meets city-living look. Living so close to Auckland beaches, they spent a lot of time there... it felt natural to bring a piece of that indoors.
With the help of interior designer Meg Ekdahl, the homeowners chose a light, bright colour scheme paired with splashes of nautical Resene colours. Paired with a lush new back garden, the couple couldn’t be happier. Anna tells us more.
Tell us about the renovation.
Internally, we gutted the whole upper level, adding an ensuite, a generous family bathroom, a scullery and making the living area open plan. The lower level has an open plan space for the kids, including a TV nook, a laundry and a media room.
Outside, we landscaped the sloped section to provide flat garden spaces, with large decks. All of the joinery was replaced, adding bifolds off the lounge and French doors off the bedroom (keeping it true to its heritage by using wooden framing).
We used Resene Half Surrender on the weatherboards, Resene Basalt on the base and Resene Alabaster on the fence and joinery. These colours all complement the stone wall that we had built across the front of the property. For contrast, we used Resene Woodsman Pitch Black stain on the gate and front door
How did you decide on the look for the interior?
A friend of ours, Meg Ekdahl, an interior designer in New Plymouth, gave us some advice for the interior colours. For a relaxed feel, and so that our colourful artwork would stand out, we kept the living area bright but neutral.
When it came to choosing the white for the interior, we wanted a light, bright feel. Following Meg’s advice, we chose Resene Quarter Bianca. We used this for all the living space, hallway and bathrooms, with Resene Alabaster on the ceilings, joinery and doors. We love Resene Quarter Bianca; our house always feels fresh and bright!
What is your favourite Resene colour and why?
We are so happy with all the colours we chose, but our personal favourite is Resene Half Dusted Blue in the master bedroom. We wanted something restful, as we both work full time, and somewhere that would instantly make us feel relaxed. We both love this colour and would repeat it in the future in other houses for either a master bedroom or another “restful zone”.
What about the girls’ rooms?
We have two girls who both wanted completely pink bedrooms! Given they are only young once, and wall colours can always be changed, we agreed and let them choose their own.
They both chose Resene Pretty In Pink for their walls, but they also wanted a sparkly pink feature wall, from the Kidz Colour Range. The eldest has a wall in Resene Enchanted and the youngest has a wall in Resene Bedazzle.
Both gave their rooms a touch of fun and excitement, especially in Amelie’s room, as it has plenty of sun in the afternoon.
What was the biggest decorating challenge for the house?
Choosing a white for the living area that wasn’t a commonly used white, and having not seen it on any other walls, felt like a bit of a gamble... but we were so pleased with the result. Also, linking through internal and external colours that complemented the feature stone wall, given the wall is visible from the master, entertaining and kitchen areas.
