Anna and Ren double down on green
When Anna and Ren built their sustainable home in Queenstown, they went green in more ways than one... installing vibrant green cabinetry in the kitchen, and using one of Anna's favourite colour – Resene Sushi – in one of the main bedrooms.
Anchored by Resene All Black and Resene Alabaster in the rest of the home, bright colour pops up in a couple of other places, from Resene Turbo in the laundry to a bold red sofa in the living room – every room has a defining feature.
Anna tells us more.
Tell us about the home.
It's a low-energy, sustainable home, designed to imitate a simple barn structure. We bought the section in 2014, started building in 2016, and moved in during April.
How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors?
I wanted colours that showcased our beautiful interior wood, which is mainly reclaimed from Christchurch and Dunedin.
What Resene colours and products have you used?
The entire house is painted in Resene All Black and Resene Alabaster, with feature colours throughout.
In the laundry, we used a bright yellow, Resene Turbo. In our son's room and kitchen, we chose Resene Sushi, a vibrant lime green. In the master bedroom and our sewing closet, we decided on Resene Friar Grey.
What part of the house are you most happy with?
I love my black bathroom, painted in Resene All Black. And my bedroom door, painted in Resene Alabaster and Resene Friar Grey, turned out to be a highlight.
What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?
Don't be scared to use colour.
What was the biggest challenge for this project?
We had three-storey scaffolding in the lounge (with an eight-metre high wall). Keeping the paint roller running from top to bottom was something else!
Also, our ceiling is painted in Resene All Black. I had a fabulous friend who made those cutting in lines look amazing.... would have hated to have done that myself.
Do you have a favourite colour?
Definitely Resene Turbo. I love my yellow laundry – it's such a splash of happy!
Resene Sushi green is also amazing. In some lights, it looks vibrant green and other times it looks almost army green. It's great for a boy (our son even chose it).
I also love the Resene All Black skirting boards and door frames.
Is there anyone else you would like mentioned?
The architect, Jessica Eyers of Hibernia, Wanaka.
Also the builders, Dave Viitakangas of Alternative Ventures Ltd, and Remarkables Construction Queenstown.
