Be a glamazon
Who doesn’t like a dash of glitz, a bit of bling and lashings of glamour? Even the most die-hard minimalist loves the soft glow of gold, the sheer strokeability of velvet or the shimmer of silk.
Going glam with your interiors doesn’t necessarily mean shopping at high-end interiors stores – although one or two expensive hero pieces will give substance to a glamour scheme. There are a few styles that bring a glamorous edge to your home.
Old-world, mellow and aged. The trick is not to overdo it. Keep the colour palette restrained but rich with deep golds (Resene Hot Toddy) and smoky browns (Resene Double Mondo), paints from the Resene Metallics & Special Effects range, along with accents of jewel tones such as purple, deep red and emerald. Other elements to include are:
Chandeliers and moody lighting,
Deep-buttoned velvet sofas and chairs,
Oversized ottomans and gilt-framed artworks and mirrors,
Turkish rugs and parquet flooring,
Antiques and carved timber furniture,
Heavy drapes in silk, velvet or satin.
The opulent resort look. The aim is to appear as if you’re living in a five-star hotel. Surround yourself with marble and limestone, rich timber furniture, oversized come-hither sofas, mosquito net-enshrouded beds and spa-like bathrooms.
Crisp and blingy. Team lots of glass, tarnished silver or pewter (the new chrome), black and white with accents of ‘jewel tones on acid’ – think teal instead of emerald (Resene Blumine), mustard instead of gold (Resene Wazzup). It’s a sort of grown-up 1980s scheme. You might add mink-style fur throws and deep-pile carpets, lacquered black furniture and grey-veined marble tiles.
Bordello. An over-the-top theatrical lusciousness with sensual colours like ruby red, bright gold and cerise pink. Artfully clutter your home with accessories, as well as large posters of Parisian scenes or 1940s movie stars. Extravagant and exaggerated, heavy velvet or brocade chaise lounges and plump cushions complete the look.
Top tip: The Resene Metallics & Special Effects range is the perfect way to introduce sophisticated glam to your walls. The metallic paints in the range give off a soft, sparkly shimmer that’s subtle yet highly individual.

Interior designer Philippa Hunt created this gorgeously, glamorously girlie room for a home show setting, using Resene Quarter Buffalo on the walls to complement the subtle powder blues, pale dove grey and white of the bed linen. The ceiling, painted in Resene Eighth Buffalo, gently cocoons the room without being overly oppressive, while the tree mural is painted in Resene Ebony Clay and Resene Tuna.
Moody walls in Resene Masala backdrop chrome, black and white furnishings in a scheme designed by Brisbane-based Phorm Interiors.
Lots of squishy pillows in silver white brocade create a feeling of simple luxury against walls in Resene Soya Bean. Thanks to the Carran family.
There’s nothing like metallic to add glamour. Resene Spark is the perfect complement to the majestic antique vanity with its shapely marble top. The bathroom is part of the Parkhill lodge near Napier; Wendy Giltrap, now of The Interior Design Group, helped with the design.
If the disco glam look is your thing, this Glitz range of fabric from Warwick Fabrics in jewel colours could be the answer.
For a bit of restrained glamour, how about this intriguing wallpaper from the Eijffinger Lux collection available at Resene?
A delicious mix of textures – glossy trunks, burnished leather, lustrous velvet – is used with a restrained palette of browns and greys in this masculine take on a glamour room. All products are from Halo.
