Bedroom design ideas for a calm and stylish space

A great bedroom will balance both style and comfort. We’ve got some wonderful design ideas that show inspiring ways to use paints and wallpapers to shape a space that feels calm, inviting, and perhaps a little more… you. Colour plays a powerful role in setting the mood, helping create a bedroom that supports rest while still looking beautifully considered.

This bedroom is painted in a tranquil shade of Resene Half Duck Egg Blue, a popular, gentle tone, perfect for a calming space and adding a touch of colour while still feeling neutral. Paired with sandy tones, it mimics a soothing beach feel. Design by homeowners Christian and Mark, image by Helen Bankers.

Colour drenched in Resene Rivergum, this gorgeous green creates a calm, cocooning effect, and pairs beautifully with the earthy tones on décor and trims. For similar window trims, stain timber in Resene Colorwood Natural or Oregon and use Resene All Black for surrounding details. Soft dusted pinks paired with sandy neutrals offer a hint to summer sunrises, all year round. In this space, the walls are painted in Resene Wafer, floor stain in Resene Colorwood Breathe Easy, headboard, table, and light in Half Merino, lamp in Serene, and art in Serene, Merino, Half Merino and Triple Merino. Resene Living bedding from Briscoes, throw and cushion from Nood. Project by Megan Harrison Turner, image by Bryce Carleton.

For the neutral lovers, consider adding subtle depth and interest with varying tones. In this bedroom, a painted headboard in Resene Double Tea creates a cosy space behind the bed, pairing well with surrounding walls in Rice Cake and a ceiling in Quarter Rice Cake. Neutral spaces also allow you to add pops of your favourite colour in décor, like this bedding and lamp in a gentle, earthy green. Design by Priyanka Sareen from Home Factor, image by Sampford Cathie.

Tip:If you’re creating a colour block look, mural with straight lines, or painted headboard, get those crisp, straight lines by masking with high-quality painter's tape, and remove the tape when the paint is almost dry.

Create a calming Nordic design with greens like on this panelled headboard in Resene Rainee. Greens also pair well with earthy neutrals like Eighth Truffle on these walls, and textured flooring in Triple Truffle, Truffle and Quarter Truffle with Resene FX Paint Effects Medium. Add other gentle hues in accessories like Mint Julep and Contented. Some lush greenery can also go a long way in adding a touch of nature’s calm into your space. In this relaxing, cocooning space, the wall is painted in Resene Cement and Doeskin mixed with Resene FX Paint Effects Medium with table and vase in Sandal. Linen from Kmart, throw and cushions from Adairs. Project by Vanessa Nouwens, image by Bryce Carleton.

Top tips for bedrooms:

  • Before you start painting, treat any mould with Resene Moss & Mould Killer and then clean walls with Resene Interior Paintwork Cleaner.
  • Resene SpaceCote Flat has a beautifully subdued finish which is ideal for master and guest bedrooms. darker hues look velvety with added depth, and very contemporary. Resene SpaceCote Flat is wipeable and easy cleaned, although not to the same degree as SpaceCote Low Sheen.
  • Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen is ideal for painting bedroom walls. This waterborne paint brings enamel-style toughness to broadwall areas with a low sheen finish.
  • Highlight heritage features such as cornices and ceiling roses by painting them with Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss or Resene Enamacryl gloss.
  • Painting the inside of your wardrobe or cabinets with Resene Enamacryl gloss will help reflect light in a small dark space and create a sense of luxury.
  • Resene FX Paint Effects medium is a way to combine two colours to create natural softness. To create the look of stone try a base colour of Resene Aspiring with FX Paint Effects medium mixed with Moon Mist over the top.
  • It's best to order more wallpaper than you need. New wallpaper collections are regularly launched, and older collections are usually deleted after three years, sometimes sooner. If you need to patch or replace any damaged paper, you may not be able to buy it anymore. Also, with graphic wallpapers, pattern matching can soak up extra rolls.
  • You can also create your own custom mural from your favourite photos at www.resene.com/wallprint.

Resene Sensitive Choice products are paints approved by the Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ to help manage asthma and allergies. They are ideal for bedrooms because they feature low or no VOCs, minimal odour and some include anti-bacterial agents, improving indoor air quality for better sleep and reduced health triggers.
