Brightening communities: Alana Mays' vibrant Chorus boxes

Artist Alana Mays is transforming everyday infrastructure into vibrant public art. Through her work on Chorus boxes, she brings colour and creativity to local communities with the help of Resene paints. Each of her murals is carefully designed to reflect the character and environment of its surroundings, adding beauty and storytelling to otherwise unremarkable streetscapes. 


‘Sweet Aroma’, located at 1459 Waugh Road, Feilding, is painted in Resene Midnight Moss, Resene Blackcurrant, Resene Burgundy, Resene Wham, Resene Spotlight, Resene Magenta, Resene PelorousResene Blue Night, Resene Black and Resene White. 

Located in Feilding, Alana’s design ‘Sweet Aroma’ sits near the Secret Garden Childcare Centre and a golf course. Alana drew inspiration from these landmarks to create a kid-friendly, nature-inspired mural bursting with bold, bubbly elements. 

The vibrant palette creates a striking combination that makes the artwork lively and inviting. The bright hues and organic forms bring a sense of joy and connection to the landscape, enhancing the charm of the area. 


‘Love at First Flight’, located at 1467 Kimbolton Road, Cheltenham, Feilding is painted in Resene White, Resene Black, ResenePelorous,Resene Burgundy, Resene Spotlight, Resene Wham and Resene Midnight Moss. 

‘Love at First Flight’ takes inspiration from the rural surroundings, which feature expansive landscapes, native flax and frequent visits from playful fantails. The artwork harmonises with the natural setting, capturing the beauty and movement of birdlife. The combination of deep blues, earthy tones and pops of bright yellow creates a visually captivating piece that feels perfectly at home in its tranquil environment. 


Alana’s design, ‘High Spirited Sea Pony’, is painted in ResenePelorous, Resene Midnight Blue, Resene White, Resene Scrumptious, Resene Magenta and Resene Sea Green. You’ll find this mural at 61-63 Koputara Rd in Himatangi Beach. 

This chorus box, ‘High Spirited Sea Pony’, celebrates the coastal setting with an enchanting underwater theme. Drawing from the ocean’s vibrancy, Alana used a complementary mix of Resenecolours to bring a playful and uplifting energy to the roadside. 

The mural’s bright pinks and blues contrast beautifully, ensuring the artwork stands out while still feeling connected to the beachside surroundings. The imagery invites passersby to pause and appreciate the whimsical, high-spirited nature of the sea pony, making this a delightful addition to the area. 

Through her chorus box murals, Alana is enriching public spaces with thoughtful, community-centred artworks. Using arich and diverse colour palette, she brings stories to life in a way that connects people to their environment. Her work not only brightens the streets but also fosters a deeper appreciation for art in everyday life.
