From winning the Auckland Art Battle to his latest exhibition, Metallica, which uses an array of Resene Metallic shades and is currently on display at Art on the Quay in Kaiapoi, Vjekoslav Nemesh continues to push the boundaries of creativity and innovation in the world of art.
Nemesh’s journey spans continents and decades and has captivated audiences with his semi-abstract creations that transcend boundaries and evoke profound introspection.

“My journey into the world of art began in childhood, fuelled by a fascination with comics,” says Nemesh. “As I grew older, this passion evolved, and in my early twenties, I received my first commission from a schoolmate to create a large painting for their apartment. This initial step paved the way for further recognition, as I went on to win several awards at both local and national exhibitions in former Yugoslavia.
“However, the upheaval of civil war prompted a pivotal decision to seek a new beginning in another country. That country became New Zealand, where I've now spent three decades honing my craft and contributing to its vibrant artistic community. This year marks a milestone as I celebrate 30 years in New Zealand, a journey marked by growth, resilience, and creative exploration.”
The Auckland Art Battle proved to be a pivotal moment in Nemesh's career, where he not only participated but emerged victorious, showcasing his ability to thrive under pressure and create captivating works of art within a constrained time frame. The experience of competing in Art Battle not only tested his artistic abilities but also fostered growth and camaraderie among fellow artists.

Emotions serve as the cornerstone of Nemesh's creative process, guiding him through each brushstroke as he seeks to capture the essence of landscapes, cosmic realms and emotional landscapes on canvas. Drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as music, meditation and personal exploration, Nemesh infuses his paintings with layers of meaning and energy, inviting viewers to embark on a journey of introspection and discovery.
Among Nemesh's extensive body of work, two pieces hold a particularly special place in his heart: Divine Connection and Emotional Rescue. “Emotional Rescue holds its own significance, having earned me the first prize at the Royal Easter Show in 2001,” says Nemesh. “Painted during one of the most challenging periods of my life, it pulsates with raw emotions, serving as a testament to the transformative power of art. Despite the adversity I faced during its creation, 'Emotional Rescue' stands as a beacon of resilience and creative expression, forever etched in my memory as a symbol of triumph over adversity.”

In his design-making process, Nemesh embraces experimentation and joy, allowing the colours to guide him on a new artistic adventure. While he has traditionally painted with oils, his collaboration with Resene paints has introduced a fresh dimension to his work, sparking a sense of curiosity and exploration in his artistic journey.
Nemesh's favourite Resene colours undoubtedly belong to the Resene FX Metallic paint range, particularly shades of blue and purple, which feature prominently in many of his paintings. The richness and depth of these hues lend a captivating allure to his artwork, infusing it with vibrancy and mystique.
