Day in the life: Residential Colour Consultant
26 Apr 2023
This week we speak to Brenda Ngatai, who tells us all about her role as a Residential Colour Consultant in Auckland. If you’re wondering what it’s like to work at Resene, you can learn more about the different roles within our colourful family-owned company by reading our newsletter. Hearing straight from our team, you can learn about what the role entails, a ‘day in the life’ and even what you need to get into a Resene role yourself.
What do you do at Resene?
I am part of the Resene Auckland Residential Colour Consultant team. The area I cover is all of the North Shore, from Devonport up to Mangawhai Heads and everywhere in between.
What does a typical day look like?
Given the large distances I need to travel covering the North Auckland area, routine and planning where possible is key. First thing in the morning I check all my emails and text messages, answer clients’ online queries, getting in touch with clients who are requesting an onsite colour consult and book them in.
Throughout the working day I travel out to clients’ homes, meet them instore at their local Resene ColorShop and help schools and businesses with their colour choices. I also answer colour related questions for different home/style magazines and websites, preparing for live radio talk shows and planning with our Auckland colour team for the next Resene event and presentations, such as the Auckland Home Show.
What do you need to be able to do the job?
A love and appreciation of colour and design, a cheerful and positive attitude, capable of dealing with some pressure, open and clear communication - those are the personals. The qualification bits include a Diploma in Interior design or other relevant qualification.
What do you love most about working at Resene?
I love the fact that the company started out in good old Kiwi fashion, making up a paint in a concrete mixer in a garage in Wellington in 1946. That was Ted Nightingale and now Resene is owned and run by his Grandson Nick Nightingale.
The company has a generous spirt for its employees, there is always support, professionally or personally and respect and appreciation for your efforts. There are a lot of staff NZ wide that have been with the company for over 10 years, I have been with Resene for 16 years and I never tire from my role as a Resene Colour Consultant.
I welcome a challenge with any type of project, as all projects and requirements for each homeowner are different, the GOLD for me is seeing the joy from the homeowner when the project is completed.
What is your favourite Resene colour?
I get obsessed with so many colours all the time. Colour has the power to change your mood, it’s magic what it can do! For my personality, I gravitate towards the softer earthy relaxed tones, like Resene Quarter Heathered Grey, Resene Smoky Green and Resene Quarter Stonehenge. I find these types of colours very soothing and peaceful.
