Lymesmith’s inspiring mural at CC Babcoq in NSW

When CC Babcoq, a trendy restaurant and bar located in Cronulla, NSW, was on the lookout for a striking mural to give its walls some flair, award-winning design practice and colour concept specialist Lymesmith were more than up for the challenge.

Named after a character from the US sitcom ‘The Nanny’, the quirky and fun rotisserie, carvery and cocktail bar was created by interior designer Tom Mark Henry, yet needed that final finishing touch to match its vibrant personality. Lymesmith’s mural, titled “Rockpool”, is a standout at the rear of the restaurant in a palette of soft Resene hues. Clearly visible from the street through the full glass façade, it gives pedestrians at the opposite mall an artistic and alluring peek inside.

“The mural was designed with a light touch. Its abstract representation of an ocean rock pool, seen from above, is a response to the restaurant's seaside location in Cronulla. The soft and floating organic shapes perfectly compliment the restaurants interior finishes palette and entices people in for a closer look,” says Lymesmith’s Sonia van de Haar.

The mural was thoughtfully created with the laidback style of the Cronulla dining scene in mind. ‘CC Babcoq’, located in a gorgeous art deco building, boasts curves in the shape of the counter, soft edges on the chic seating and a vibrant green terrazzo bar. Resene Half Escape’s baby blue hue offers a soothing injection throughout the dining space, providing the perfect backdrop for diners to enjoy their meal and drinks.

Sonia notes the mural concept was initially developed as a paper cut-out collage. “When Tom Mark Henry presented the box of material samples and concept for the fit-out, I was able to refine the mural palette and match certain elements in Resene paint colours,” she says. The aim was to capture the duality of views experienced when looking into a rock pool, and Resene’s light pastel tones and earthy browns and greens were crucial in bringing this vision to life.

CC Babcoq has no doubt benefited from the mural, with it being a strong drawcard for passersby and social media mavens who line up to take pictures with the colourful artwork. So big was its impact, that the owners designed staff uniforms to match the mural, as well featuring it heavily in their advertising. It’s fair to say Lymesmith’s considered design and refreshing colour choices nailed the brief.

Lymesmith’s colour selection includes; Resene Half Escape, Resene Taco, Resene Paper Doll, Resene Apache, Resene Cape Palliser, Resene Turtle Green, Resene Black, Resene Feijoa, Resene Iron Oxide. Mural background painted in Resene Apple Blossom.
