Reader roundup: Abstract art, moody bedrooms, and inspiring chalkboard paint

We love seeing what our readers get up to using Resene paints and products, and it has been a busy couple of months. From beautifying public spaces to full exterior decorating, here are some of our latest discoveries that might get you inspired to begin your own project at home.

Judith definitely wanted a change but just wasn’t sure which colours to choose. “I made use of the Resene Ask a Colour Expert service and went with their suggestions,” she says. “I am delighted with the result and the house looks much more modern and fresh now.”

Judith’s house is now painted in Resene Steam Roller on the walls and garage doors, Resene Half Grey Chateau on the basement, railings and posts, Resene Mountain Mist on the deck and Resene Black White under the eaves.

“My granddaughter is very artistic so I asked her for a suggestion for the doors. She knew I was keen on red. I needed to see her colour choice on a big piece of card in order to be convinced, but I love it,” Judith says about her bright red Resene Dynamite door.

Artist Rikki-Jean considers herself an abstract expressionist. In this piece she uses Resene Jalapeno, Resene Pohutukawa, Resene Black and Resene Spanish White. Some of her other favourite shades are Resene Niagara, Resene Endeavour, Resene Wellywood, Resene Deep Koamaru, Resene Lightening Yellow and Resene Adrenalin. 

“It’s raw art, there is nothing but ideas of layers, textures and contrasts in my mind, and the rest, just flows from me,” Rikki-Jean says. “I am an extremely creative person and art for me is very natural, I have a very deep connection to creativity, it runs in my veins.”

Kimberley sought the help of a Resene Colour Expert to help her choose a black shade for her bedroom. She already had Resene Black White painted on the rest of her walls so was looking for a shade that would complement this timeless white. Resene Colour Expert Meryl Southey suggested choosing a cooler toned black rather than a warmer toned black (blue or green based rather than brown) as Resene Black White sits on the cooler side of the spectrum. After suggesting Resene Double Cod Grey, Resene Nero or Resene Blackjack, Kimberley chose Resene Blackjack as the shade for her bedroom which she is thrilled about.

The team at Mash Trust had a great time preparing and painting the wall in their group room. They used Resene FX Blackboard Paint so they could write and share inspiring and important messages. The team are so proud of what they have done and have taken ownership of it making sure everything that gets written on the wall can motivate and inspire each group that comes through their programme.

This gorgeous mural was painted in Ruakākā by artist Melinda Butt, providing a brighter and happier public space. Melinda used the colours Resene Gondwana, Resene Blackout, Resene Golden Glow and Resene Half Melting Moment. Keep an eye out the next time you’re driving through!
