The delicate, breezy blue of Resene Frozen has transformed this once dated bathroom into a fresh and inviting space.
Megan Toms, homeowner and director at All About Kitchens and Bathrooms, recently undertook the task of rejuvenating the bathroom in her grand old Waterloo home. The original bathroom, while rich in character, had numerous issues – a seldom-used bath, a cramped corner shower with poor water pressure and an awkwardly positioned toilet.
These flaws, combined with a lack of proper ventilation and modern amenities, made the space feel small and outdated. Megan's vision was to transform this tired room into a modern, functional space, all while preserving her home's historic charm.
The backlit mirror enhances the gentle blue of Resene Frozen on the walls. The panelling is painted in Resene White. For a dark blue finish on your vanity, useResene Bunting.
The bathroom renovation began with addressing structural challenges. The walls were sagging, the ceiling was in disrepair and a leaking vanity had damaged the floor. First on the agenda was to strip down the walls and ceiling, replace the floor joists and bearers, and ensure a solid foundation before any aesthetic improvements could begin.
Once these challenges were overcome, the fun began – the colour and design! The bathroom's high 2700mm stud and original scotia provided a perfect backdrop for a design that honours the home’s 1930s heritage while introducing contemporary elements. To achieve this balance, Megan chose wall panelling painted in Resene White semi-gloss. This choice has not only brightened the room but also maintained a clean, classic look.
Like a breath of fresh air, Resene Frozen brightens this bathroom making it into a contemporary space. Resene White on the panelling provides the perfect contrast against the blue tones and brass tones.
Central to the new design is a custom floor-standing vanity in Durostyle French Navy, with a 50mm Glacier White Corian top. This striking piece adds a touch of elegance and contrasts beautifully with the brushed brass tapware and fittings, including five brushed brass towel poles. The combination of navy and brass gives the bathroom a sophisticated yet warm feel.
The choice of materials and colours was carefully considered to maximise the sense of space and warmth in the bathroom, which is located on the least sunny side of the house.
New brass joinery pairs well with the Resene Frozen walls and Resene White panelling.
The final touch was selecting the right paint colours to harmonise the space. Resene Frozen, a soft breezy blue, was chosen for the upper walls. This colour adds a serene, inviting atmosphere and complements the navy vanity. The wall panelling, painted in Resene White, provides a crisp, clean contrast that breaks up the height of the walls and enhances the room’s architectural features.
Megan’s bathroom now feels both timeless and contemporary. The transformation has not only addressed the practical issues of the old bathroom but has also created a space that is both beautiful and in keeping with the character of the home.
