Upcycled surfboards channel the colours of the ocean

10 Feb 2022

As a former scuba-dive instructor, Andre Roth has a love of the ocean. She is also a talented artist and combines her love of both ocean and art in her decorative surf boards painted in

sea-washed Resene colours.

Once painted, the boards are purely decorative and she finishes them with a coat of Resene Clearcoat UVS, a gloss clear finish waterborne emulsion that protects against sun for outside display.

“I enjoy painting on old surfboards. It’s a great canvas for ocean themed art,” Andre says. “Resene has a very wide variety of colours which makes the painting process much easier and fun. If I run out of a colour it is guaranteed that I can find the same shade of colour again.”

Andre uses Resene Waterborne Smooth Surface Sealer to coat the surfboard and then paints it with Resene Zylone Sheen waterborne low sheen to give a smooth, tough surface. Next, she sketches out the design and paints in the colours with Resene testpots. On this board she used Resene Biloba Flower, Resene Dancing Girl, Resene Salomie, Resene Wax Flower, Resene Cornflower, Resene Caramel, Resene Flourish, Resene Caper, Resene Jordy Blue, Resene Delta Blue, Resene Charlotte, Resene Norway, Resene Anakiwa, Resene Float, Resene Summer Green, Resene Green Smoke, Resene Saratoga, Resene New Leaf, Resene Toffee, Resene Dark Buff, Resene Oak, Resene Frozen and Resene Excalibur

Naturally, Andre uses many shades of blues and  greens.

Her current favourite colour is Resene Riptide, “It falls in the middle being a vibrant aqua and turquoise shade that reminds me of the ocean,” she says.

The former South African now lives in Papamoa, Bay of Plenty.

“It’s walking distance to the beach. I enjoy the relaxed, beachy atmosphere of the area and the beautiful nature. I am close to a few surf spots so I get to surf whenever the conditions allow!

Andre is a keen surfer, and this is one board that won’t get painted. It’s a 9'4" Ferral longboard.

The dancing octopus is one of Andre’s favourite creations. Andre has plenty of underwater experience to call on when dreaming up her designs after working as a scuba-dive instructor. This board is painted in Resene Dancing Girl, Resene Avocado, Resene Caper, Resene Green Smoke, Resene New Leaf , Resene Golden Glow, Resene Salomie, Resene Wax Flower, Resene Moroccan Spice, Resene Charlotte, Resene Yes Please, Resene Vista Blue, Resene Delta Blue, Resene Curious Blue, Resene Shakespeare, Resene Indian Ink, Resene Biscay, Resene Just Dance, and her current favourite colour, Resene Riptide, a strong aqua blue.
