Bold outlook
Love home exteriors with a bit of oomph? These homes are no wall flowers, painted and stained in bold Resene colours – they might even inspire you to go down the same route.
Here are few reasons why we love bold exteriors.
Wow factor
There’s no denying the curb appeal an exterior in a deep colour brings, without being too bright or busy. Black exteriors are becoming more and more popular, no longer seen as dreary, and now seen as contemporary and stylish.
Builds character
Going for a bold colour choice for your exterior will help to accentuate character details to a home’s exterior, especially when using black paint or stains, whether it’s Victorian detailing or modern weatherboards.
We love how Resene Pitch Black looks on this beautiful beachside home – the colour has been named one of the Top 20 most popular Resene colours for two years running.
Take your cue from nature
If you’re not sold on a black exterior, but want to go big with colour, look around your environment. One family took inspiration from Australian gum for their home’s exterior, staining a section in red Resene Totem Pole. It blends in beautifully with the Canberra, Australia, property.
Top tip
Dark colours absorb more of the sun’s heat and can put stress on the cladding. If you’re going to use a darker colour for your exterior, think about using the Resene CoolColour range. It’s formulated with special pigment technology to reflect more of the sun’s energy. Read more about it here.

The design brief for this home was to create a rustic meets contemporary home, with a coastal, equestrian Cape Cod look and feel. A contrasting black exterior in Resene Blackjack with barn shutters and garage doors painted in Resene Double Black White was a big part of the design. Designed by Julie Richardson-Smith of Customkit Buildings.

The rock features at the entrance are striking and help to ground the building to the rustic feel of the property. A bold exterior painted in rich Resene Blackjack brings the contemporary element to the home, as well as a touch of luxe. Designed by Julie Richardson-Smith of Customkit Buildings.

Warm – physically and emotionally. That was the brief for the build of this Canberra, Australia, by its owners, which was achieved partly by a striking red and black exterior using Resene Woodsman stains, Resene Totem Pole (red) and Resene Sheer Black. Designed by Light House Architecture and Science.

The rich red and charcoal Resene Woodsman stained cladding references colours from Australian gum tree bark. The red stain is Resene Woodsman Totem Pole, and the charcoal stain is Resene Woodsman Sheer Black. Designed by Light House Architecture and Science.
