Cameron brings the wow factor in green

When Cameron Grindlay of Dwelling Architectural Design was asked to design this new build in Dunedin, he immediately knew that it needed to stand out – hence the slices of Resene Wasabi on the weatherboards on its exterior.

The house is situated amongst a new sub division of mostly ‘cookie cutter’ houses, says Cameron, “with overpowering hipped and gable roofs and playschool type windows”. He wanted something different.

Kept clean, simple and elegant, with a splash of colour with the green Resene Wasabi, the house is modern and fresh.

Cameron tells us more.

What was the client’s brief, and how do your design and colour choices respond to that?

The brief was for a sunny, light family home that was warm and highly insulated, using passive solar design principles such as a Trombe wall.

The clients also wanted painted finishes to the exterior and liked the classic weatherboard look.

What was your overall design philosophy?

Keep it clean, simple and elegant. Strangely, it’s harder and takes more thought and time to do this. It’s easy to make something look busy and cluttered. Hence the design was based on two separate rectangular wings with a link in between.

The two wings were orientated towards the sun, and eaves and louvres were used as sun control. The orientation also had to keep in mind the need for outdoor playing space for the kids.

What Resene colours and products were used, and what inspired those choices?

We used Resene Black White and Resene Wasabi for the exterior. I wanted a clean, sharp white, not an off white – Resene Black White is a classic white that looks great on the exterior of both modern and old houses. It also has the added bonus of not putting extra pressure on your substrate from a UV point of view.

Choosing Resene Wasabi for the exterior was a bit of fun and a way of using a simple colour to give extra interest – although when I suggested Resene Wasabi, I didn’t think the owners would really go for it. They did and loved it.

Inside, we painted the wall in Resene Half Parchment, a softer and warmer white compared to Resene Black White. It has great flexibility in terms of interior furnishings. We used Resene Eighth Parchment on the ceiling.

For the heat sink walls, including the Trombe wall, we used Resene Mondo. We wanted a dark yet warm colour for the passive solar heat sink walls to maximise these features. Resene Mondo fit the bill.

What part of the design are you happiest with?

That’s a hard question. My default position is always towards timbers such as cedar, or stone or steel, in terms of what I would do for myself to the exterior – but by the time we finished this home, I told the owners that if they ever they wanted to sell, I would love to buy it!

I love the way it sits on the site, and I love the lightness of it. I love the passive solar design of it. I love the family open plan area and the winter lounge with heat transfer system, so that we don’t let heat go to waste. I love the kitchen and the matching ceiling panels, and I love the Resene Wasabi highlights.

What was the biggest design challenge for this project?

Maximising the site from a yard/play area point of view while still making the sun work and ensuring that the building was compliant with the planning rules.

Is there anyone else you would like mentioned?

The owners, who are lovely people to work for, and GL Stevenson Builders Ltd, who are excellent builders that undertook the project. Overall it was a real team effort.
