Cape Cod meets modern industrial in this stunning seaside home
Nestled behind the sand dunes of Papamoa, this contemporary two-story new-build soaks up the ever-changing seascape and coastline. With a mix of delicate and bold Resene paint colours, interior designer Olivia Ellis has worked her magic on this beachside home.
When meeting with clients Paul and Kate, Olivia came away with a brief to create an interior with a modern industrial feel, but with softer touches and elements of Cape Cod. Olivia admits pairing the two styles together was a bit of a challenge, but as the house was a new-build, she was able to begin with a clean slate and work with the clients to create their dream home.
“I worked closely with the clients to understand how each space would be utilised, and from there we could bring in colour and texture that worked within the given brief,” says Olivia.
The home is modern, casual and welcoming, and makes entertaining a breeze, which was important to Olivia’s clients. The seamless indoor-outdoor flow on both levels means that entertaining – and living – is easy all year round.
As you enter the home your eye is led up the beautifully crafted staircase to the open plan
living on the first floor. The walls are painted in soft Resene Merino, a light and versatile off-white with a slight green undertone, perfect for framing the view out the sliding doors and skylight complementing the shades of the dunes, greenery, and coastline.
The painted feature wall in Resene Element above the fireplace connects the interior living space with the dark exterior cladding, and provides a nice contrast with the main interior wall colour in Resene Merino. This neutral, which is used throughout the home, works beautifully as a backdrop for the client’s artworks.
“The combination of polished concrete, engineered timber and wool loop carpet flooring are the basis for the layering of colour, texture and pattern in every room,” says Olivia.
The two guest bedrooms are both relaxing sanctuaries, with their Resene Duck Egg Blue and Resene Merino walls, and textured wool carpet.
“Stunning tiles in all the ensuites set the tone for the adjoining bedrooms and give a sense of calm and harmony throughout,” Olivia says.
In the master bedroom, Resene Indian Ink provides a striking backdrop for the rattan headboard and bold contrast in the space. The colours on the walls, and in the fabrics and furnishings, reflect the rolling dunes and everchanging seaside beside the house.
The media room was the perfect space to be creative with colour and texture. Resene Double Masala was paired with the rich timber furniture to create a luscious moody feel. Resene Masala is one of Olivia’s favourite Resene colours, which she loves for its richness and warmth.
“Relaxation is a common theme across all the spaces and the media room was no different, it’s cosy with its ambient lighting, moody walls and oversized lounge suite and is the perfect hang out,” Olivia says.
The tropical themed wallpaper in the guest toilet adds colourful intrigue amongst the blacks and whites in the home. Resene Wallpaper Collection 90222 creates a fun and fresh feel in this small area.
Every every space in the home has its own subtle identity, say Olivia but she adds that the living room and kitchen are her favourites, anchoring the house with high impact colours such as Resene Element.
“One of my biggest learnings from this project is to be confident with your decision when specifying bold color and patterned finishes as this can be so impactful in a space.”
Olivia’s clients are overjoyed with the finished result. They now have the modern industrial space with a Cape Cod feel that is their dream home, which they can enjoy at their leisure.

Homes with good indoor and outdoor flow, also tend to come in for a little extra wear and tear as friends and family move in and out more than they would tend to in a more closed off area. Make sure your paint finishes can handle this with durable waterborne enamels, such as Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen on walls, Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss on trim and joinery and Resene SpaceCote Flat on the ceiling.
Ask your Resene ColorShop staff to add Resene Fly Deterrent to your paint to discourage flies from sitting on the surface, which will help to reduce the size and number of fly spots.
