Christy and Simon’s dream home in St Clair

Buying a house can be tricky, especially when you can’t find one that ticks off everything on your dream home checklist. Seeking a specific design and layout to complement their lifestyle, Christy and Simon decided to build their own home in Dunedin to make sure they checked every box. Their new dream home is an architectural marvel and the Resene colours used throughout the interiors are sensational.

The St Clair couple wanted a smaller home that still had everything they needed, plus extras, such as an area for Airbnb, a space for Christy to teach yoga and a space to feature, as well as store, their impressive surfboard collection.

“We worked closely with the architects at Stevenson Design to come up with a home we were truly in love with,” says Christy.

“We ended up spending a little extra on the design stage until we got it just right. It is the cheapest part of the process to make changes, so why not absolutely nail it here. We are so glad we did as we loved being a part of it all coming together and are even more in love with how it turned out!”

Professional snowboarder, property manager and yoga teacher Christy, had experience contracting builders for a new build, and the fact that Simon is a builder by trade, was a huge advantage.

“The project went very smoothly and was very enjoyable overall,” Christy says. “Yes, there were times, sometimes weeks or months at a time, where we were working 15 hour days, 7 days a week, but we both knew what we were getting ourselves into with a self-build so just knuckled down and got it done.”

Being so intimately involved in the whole process meant the pair were able to keep their fingers on the pulse the whole time, keeping an eye on when materials were running low and when they were starting to fall behind. For the motivated duo it was just a matter of digging deep and putting in some late nights to catch back up.

“The more organised we were, the smoother the project ran and the more we could project the months ahead, the more we were able to adapt and work towards the deadlines we had set ourselves to keep on track.

When it came to choosing the interior colour scheme, the couple worked with Jill Marsh, the local Resene Colour Consultant, which they say made the process simple and stress free.

Jill helped Christy and Simon to design their colour palette based on what they wanted the finished space to feel like. They were looking for cosy and comfortable; a haven from all the excitement, trials and tribulations of life; a space that aided relaxation and restoration as well as inspiration, and a space where they would love to spend time.

“Jill was very knowledgeable about the whole Resene colour range and an absolute pleasure to work with. After explaining the feel and the look we were trying to achieve in our home, she helped guide us towards exactly what we didn’t know we wanted. That was huge given the many colour choice options,” says Christy.

“We were able to narrow it down to a few options quite quickly, so we took these samples home and decided on a winner, which we love.”

The couple went with soft warm Resene Half Rice Cake throughout their home as it’s one of their favourite colours. The neutral shade also meant they would be able to add pops of other colours later on if they wanted to. They chose to use Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen on the walls and Resene Lustacryl on the trims.

Christy and Simon describe their interior style as Scandinavian mixed with beachy and modern mid-century. This shines through in many rooms of the house with the minimalistic features, clean lines, and functionality that doesn’t sacrifice any charm or beauty.

The kitchen is stunning and fresh with some feature wood cupboards, shelves and an island. Resene Half Rice Cake was used to keep the kitchen bright with Resene SpaceCote Kitchen & Bathroom to ensure durability and added protection.

The Resene Half Rice Cake walls bend round into the living area, where you see a view of the tree covered hills and the ocean for miles. The neutral walls work to draw your eye to this incredible view, as well as feature items like the surfboard and artistic décor on the main wall.

“So much thought went into every nook and cranny that it is hard to choose a favourite area, but if I had to pick it would be the living area. It’s where we spend most of our time and the view out of the two large front windows is so special,” says Christy.

“I can get lost for hours simply just gazing out at the forever changing southern ocean, and observing the way the weather rolls off the headlands in the distance and out to sea.”

The house is in a very tranquil setting as it is predominantly surrounded by nature and feels quite secluded, you would never know it is just a few minutes’ walk to St Clair’s popular Esplanade, and a 10-minute drive to the heart of Dunedin city.

The master bedroom is a welcome sight. The blushing fabrics and warm décor with feature surfboards pair well with the Resene Rice Cake walls, along with some well-placed greenery climbing above the headboard. A great choice of colours and the windows wrap around the wall to let in the light and landscape beyond.

Christy is particularly happy with the way the spare room turned out. The space doubles as her yoga studio and she worked closely with the joiners at Taylor Made to design a Murphy bed that was comfortable but also looked inconspicuous when folded away. It means the space can be used for Christy’s private yoga sessions with clients, as well as for her own yoga practice and zen time.

This multi-talented homeowner also designed a Murphy desk, that can fold down when in use and close over the open bookshelf when not in use. It means the same Swiss army knife style room can double as an office. It’s a great example of how Christy and Simon have made the most out of every room and every bit of space in their smaller house.

“We had an amazing bunch of tradies. We were so thankful and, to be honest, I think you can feel it in the finished project,” says Christy.

“Communication with the plumbers, roofers and sparkies was key and meant that we could ensure the build was at a stage and ready for them each time so that we didn’t have to reschedule, which sometimes starts the snow ball effect of falling behind. Big thanks to all the crew, especially to our Mitre 10 rep Mike, we are so stoked with the finished product and everyone made it so enjoyable to work on.”

Christy and Simon and their two Griffon doggos Gwyn and Gidget, are all stoked with their new home. They loved the entire process and all of the people they got to work with.

“If anyone else is considering building or renovating their home I would highly recommend it. Be realistic with budgets and time, look after your tradies and embrace the challenge and the hard work because the end result is so worth it.”
