Colour trending: Christmas goes casual

Some of us get off on the whole hype of Christmas – buying and decorating the tree, wrapping the presents, laying on a full-monty Christmas dinner with all the traditional dishes.

Others are happy to take a more casual approach to the festive season – make do with whatever is on hand to decorate, and fire up the barbecue for Christmas Day lunch. It’s a relaxed way to enjoy Christmas and avoid the stress of too much preparation after what might have been a very busy year.

And if you have debunked to the beach, bach or friends for Christmas, a casual approach may be the answer.

Be inspired by stylist Gem Adams casual bach Christmas setting where a ladder painted in Resene Xanadu becomes the tree, strung with shell leis and simple cut-out stars painted in Resene Poppy, and wooden decorations painted in Resene Spotlight. A wreath is wrapped in foliage from the garden.

The gifts are wrapped in plain brown paper that’s been quickly given some personality with a pretty pattern of Resene Spotlight spatters. Tied with kitchen string and handmade tags, it’s all easy to achieve.

The walls are painted in Resene Duck Egg Blue, the retro sideboard has drawer fronts in Resene Sea Fog and the floor is in Resene Barometer.

And after…

Then after the festivities are over and it’s time to return to normal, simply strip down the ladder-tree, prop it agains the wall and use it as a handy hanging space. Roll on the holidays!

Why it works…

·       For a casual beachy feel, use colours of the sea – Resene Duck Egg Blue, Resene Xanadu and Resene Barometer.
·       Use a darker colour on the floor to ‘anchor’ the scheme.
·       Use a mix of retro and rustic elements – the 1970s sideboard, and the old ladder
·       Use texture in the accessories – the woven light shade, the tactile shells, a straw hat and basket.
