Corina and David bring colour to castle living
Your home is your castle, so the saying goes. Except for Corina Montgomery and David Lawrence, their home is exactly that… a castle set on a flat 7000 square metre site in Tamahere, just outside of Hamilton.
Painted in beautiful, bold Resene colour and styled after a grand French Country chateau, the home is filled with lavish interior details – including the 300-year old doors shipped out from France, lovingly restored over an eight-month period.
The home was a year in the planning and took another year to build, and features everything you’d expect from a castle – including a collection of stunning chandeliers.
Corina tells us more.
How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors?
Our philosophy was to provide a design that would bring together the iconic character and elegance of each space with practical luxury. There is a mix of vintage and new, allowing for memories and treasures brought home from our travels. We spent a lot of time looking for the perfect antiques to decorate the home but wanted it to look effortless. The decor is relaxed and reflects our personalities.
What part of the house are you happiest with?
The formal living room for its time-worn yet sophisticated style. We fell in love with the colour, textures and the inspiration which is truly French – from antique furniture to leather suites, chandeliers and the gilded mirrors. The colour works perfectly.
What is your advice for someone trying to achieve a similar look?
My advice is to always style with your heart and your passions. Don’t try too hard. The French adopt the same laissez-faire attitude towards interiors, as they do with their style.
What was the biggest challenge for this project?
Respecting French design in every element within the home.
Do you have a favourite colour, and if so why is it your favourite?
Resene Black Magic. This colour inspires longevity and true romance within the home.
Did you know… that no all blacks are created equal? Just like whites, there are many variations with all sorts of subtle twists in the Resene paint colour collections. Resene Black Magic is actually a deep warm brown. Check out the Resene Whites & Neutrals collection for more options.
