Derelict to delightful: Resene Double Foundry and Marley Stratus give this bungalow timeless style

This 1920s bungalow has had an adventurous life. With its handsome Resene Double Foundry exterior colour and matching Marley Stratus Design Series® spouting and downpipes in Grey Friars®, on first appearance you can’t tell this Dairy Flat home is nearing 100 years old. Not only has the transitional bungalow undergone several extensions and modifications in its century-long lifetime, but it survived a 16km+ relocation from its original site to its current location on a 1ha lifestyle block.

When Ed Aitken and his family bought the home five years ago, it was a bit rough around the edges. The home had had a hard life and had lost some of its original character after multiple additions.

“It really was a party house prior to us buying it, but it’s been a labour of love restoring it to the property we think it deserves to be,” says Ed.

“It was important to retain the character of the home, but the tricky bit was identifying what the character was.”

Slowly and surely, Ed, the general manager and owner of property services company Guttercare, project managed the renovations tackling it in two stages. The first step was increasing the footprint of the house by 25sqm and reconfiguring the interior spaces to add an extra bedroom, bathroom and living space. Stage 2 saw the addition of a shed and carport.

Colour was integral to keeping the character of the home and also making it work in harmony with its rural environment. Ed chose the semi-gloss waterborne exterior paint Resene Sonyx 101 tinted to Resene Double Foundry for the weatherboards with Resene Enamacryl gloss waterborne enamel on the trims in Resene White for contrast.  For the spouting and downpipes Ed matched the house colour using the Marley Stratus Design Series® Typhoon® spouting and RP80® downpipes in Grey Friars®.

“We chose the Typhoon spouting as it is a classic looking half round profile which we felt suited the property. We also opted to install a combination of internal and external brackets to add a bit of interest to the system without creating too much clutter,” says Ed.

“The Grey Friars colour worked well with the Resene Double Foundry and we love the look,” he adds.

Ed says his favourite part of the renovation is the entrance and hallway which revealed the house’s heritage kauri timber. He used Resene Whitewash to soften the colour of the kauri but accentuate the natural wood grain.

“We moved the front door two rooms along which seemed to make it central in the house,” says Ed.

“There are some kauri timber boards which we whitewashed and they look really good.”

Ed is currently doing further extensions on the home including increasing the size of the office and adding two bedrooms to accommodate extended family.

“We’re really happy overall with the look and feel of the house and have tried to mesh old with new. It feels and looks like it is established and has been on the site forever,” he says.

Stratus Design Series® is Marley’s most popular spouting and downpipe range. Available in New Zealand’s favourite roofing and exterior design colours, Black, Grey Friars® and Ironsand® plus metallic options Copper and Titanium. The weatherboards of the transitional bungalow were stripped back and painted in semi-gloss Resene Sonyx 101 tinted to Resene Double Foundry. The windows and trim are in Resene Enamacryl in Resene White.

Ed chose the Marley Stratus Design Series® Typhoon® spouting and RP80® downpipes in Grey Friars® to complement the Resene Double Foundry weatherboards and Resene White window frames. Ed was keen to have external brackets on the guttering and downpipe, which look great with traditional homes and are also ideal for high wind-zones, like this site. However, rather than having them positioned every 300mm as recommended, Ed opted to alternate between internal and external brackets. This means every second bracket is external and positioned 600mm apart with the added strength from the internal breaks. ‘It looks great and is super solid,” he says.

Old and new have been blended seamlessly through the use of the downpipes and spouting from the Marley Stratus Design Series® in Grey Friars® paired with the striking Resene Double Foundry exterior and Resene White window trims. The house pops against its green countryside setting, but also has a look reminiscent of a barn house.

Marley Typhoon® is a stylish yet functional half-round profile which has excellent capacity and flow characteristics. It’s available in a range of colours with matching RP80® downpipes from the Marley Stratus Design Series®; Grey Friars®, Ironsand®, Black, Copper and Titanium. Also available in the well known and loved white range. The weatherboards are Resene Double Foundry and the trim is Resene White.

The pool house was on the property already when Ed bought the home. He has refurbished and rejuvenated it with Resene White on the exterior.

When Ed bought the home five years ago it was very tired. Renovations started by adding 25m2 to make a total of 230m2 for the four bedrooms, three bathrooms and two living spaces. The aim was to totally modernise the home for comfortable living while still retaining the classic charm of the era. This includes wide skirting boards, solid timbers and using the high ceiling space to maximum effect. The far wall of the kitchen is in Resene Triple Sea Fog and the ceiling is in Resene Alabaster and the trims are in Resene White.

Resene Double Tapa used around the stove of the kitchen gives the space a cosy quality when paired with Resene Triple Sea Fog on the right wall and the ceiling and trims are in Resene White.

The interior of the home is filled with warm neutral tones and inviting textures. The entrance way features beautiful old Kauri boards which were uncovered during the work and whitewashed using Resene Colorwood Whitewash to create a stunning entrance feature. The ceiling and trims are Resene White.

Resene Triple Sea Fog and Resene Alabaster gives the lounge a soft and relaxed feeling, and pairs well with the natural leather furniture and soft throws used in the space.

The laundry looks clean and crisp in Resene Alabaster and Resene White on the trims.

The children have bedrooms to envy, one with walls in Resene Alabaster a well-constructed sky bed, complete with ladder finished in Resene Colorwood Whitewash. The sky bed is the perfect for tweens or teenagers who need a bit of extra privacy.
