Designer captures the Cape Cod style
Before its renovation, this late 1990s home on Auckland's North Shore was in desperate need of a refit. But it had something great going for it – a fabulous location right by the seaside.
It's recently been renovated, winning a Registered Master Builders award for Glover Homes, and, with the help of beautiful soft greys and cool whites from the Resene paint range, the home is now as spectacular as its vast sea views.
The home owners hired interior designers Pipi Design, with a brief to open the house up as much possible to ensure the ocean could be viewed from every room. The designers answered the call by opening up the interior and using a colour palette inspired by the coastal environment.
Pipi Design talks to us about the home reno.
How did you decide on the overall look of the interiors? What was your overall philosophy?
The homeowners wanted the house to be bright and airy with a strong connection to the beach. It was also very important to have a fabulous entertaining area that could flow seamlessly to the outdoors. The look they were after was Cape Cod – but a modern take on Cape Cod.
Can you tell us more about the renovations?
We removed all internal walls in the middle level to make one huge open area, with a huge kitchen (including a four metre marble island and seven metres of marble bench). We finished the kitchen area with bi-fold windows that open up the entire eastern side of the kitchen.
Upstairs we removed all internal walls and reconfigured all the bedrooms and bathrooms. We also worked with the architects to square off the front of the house and added two metre high bi-fold doors onto the entire front and side of the house.
What part of the house are you happiest with?
I think my favourite part of the house is the entrance. When you walk in, you see this graceful grand sweeping staircase with beautiful light streaming in. It is part of the west side of the house, so beautiful golden light spills in all afternoon. Then you travel up curved stairs and immediately are hit with this massive expanse of glass that takes your eye out to the ocean beyond. It really worked beautifully.
What was one the biggest challenges for this project?
Getting the job done in time for the homeowners to move in before Christmas!
